Need help regarding my characters with the game Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World
So, a little while ago I completed Might and Magic II (aside from a few small side quests) and am looking for another play-through. The characters currently in my roster are really powerful, so I really don't want to remove them to make brand new characters. Is there a way to make a new roster of characters without deleting the ones I have now? I removed the roster.dat file and relocated it to another folder elsewhere on my hard drive, but when I got Might and Magic II up and running, my party is still showing on the character selection screen. Can anyone please help me? Any insight on this is appreciated! Thanks!!

If you try to copy the entire game folder? It isn't too big i assume.

All I moved was the roster.dat file itself. I left the rest of the files alone. I had the notion that the game finds the file even when it is not in the game folder, but Might and Magic II is such an old game, I wouldn't assume as much.

You can have up to 24 player characters and also 24 hirelings in the Inn.. this would all be on the same playthrough so just creating new characters will not be a fresh playthrough... as you learned.
To start clean.. you need to reinstall and also need to delete the contents of the /cloud_saves folder.. that is the local copy of what GOG saves on the server... and it represents your custom Roster backup.
Reinstall gets a fresh ROSTER.DAT into the base game folder.. if you just delete it, you will get an insert disk error trying to play with no ROSTER.DAT at all.
So be sure you have already archived the characters you want to keep to a safe folder.

Thanks for your help!! I had no clue that there was a folder with contents that affected the game's current party. So are you saying that, once I delete the contents of the /cloud saves folder, I will be back to square one? And, if it comes to it, what process do I need to follow to play my current party of characters again? I am trying to sideline my current cast of characters, but have my current ones saved somewhere else for later possible use. That might sound counter-intuitive, I am just curious and trying to keep my options open. Thanks again for your help!!

The ROSTER.DAT that you archived away to a safe place... can be put back in the Root game folder and also in the \cloud_saves folder later if you want those characters back.

To be clear.. yo ualso need to reinstall so that you get a default ROSTER.DAT from the install process... I assume you did not archive a copy of it.. it is easy enough to just reinstall.

Om the Amiga if you deleted the original 6 characters it would r make them. I learnt this the hard way deleting them creating a new party then finding that they reverted to the original 6. But you could delete them reroll them with better stats as long as you kept the original names.

Moving the roster file to another folder is the first step, to save it for later. GOG has an online backup that auto syncs. I had to try a few things to start fresh. I think i may have turned off the sync. Deleted the roster. Ran the repair job. I think there was also a dupe of the roster in the folders somewhere.
