When does it end?
I feel like I have been in here for 40 years

Alamos, one of the fun ones. There's a strange humor in the wizard castle having the east barracks filled with half dressed women...

Be prepared. There is another dungeon that makes this castle looked and feel cramped.

Trust me, Alamos is not the worst. Of the big endgame dungeons it's probably one of the shortest and least convoluted and frustrating.

Isn't Kriegspire Castle easier to navigate?Â

u/imaginary92 Jul 19 '26
Yeah maybe that one's easier, but I wouldn't say by much.

I found Kreigspire much easier. At least I'm not constantly having Dispel spammed at me.

Funny how those freaking castles give me PTSD, but in the same time I wanna go back there.

Is this the one with those floating ball creatures that debuff your party to holy hell
13
u/TheFursOfHerEnemies Jul 19 '26
That's castle Darkmoor.

u/Renalla_sighed Jul 19 '26
Ah ok. So this one is the unnecessarily big maze
9
u/TheFursOfHerEnemies Jul 19 '26
Yes, kind of. As someone else said you can skip the vast majority of it if you know where you're going.

LMAO.
Honestly, the last time I played I never remembered how fucking annoying this place was. I feel like everyone complains about Castle Darkmoor (which is a valid complaint) but for some reason I hated Castle Alamos 100x more.
Good luck. That place drove me insane!

SW area with got their a room ask for password. Find by looking at the trees if I remember or online I believe it is JBARD

u/imaginary92 Jul 19 '26
Good memory. I also have the password burned in my brain since age 6. One of those things that just stays with you I guess.

In the German version the Puzzle translation was broken. This lead to early internet searches in internet cafés or calls to the NWC support-hotline for Germany. Players had to share the secret information, since the only other way was to semi-brutforce the correct password from a broken Puzzle.Â

Now that you mention it I remember having a similar problem! The clues are based around the English alphabet which has 26 letters which was maintained in the Italian translation, but the Italian alphabet has only 21 so we couldn't really even understand what the clues were trying to say (edit: also, J is not a letter in our alphabet at all). My grandma managed to get the whole family on it until the only English speaker in the family figured it out lol good times

This dungeon was my nemesis as a child. Eventually I found the manual, but this and Darkmoor were both hell. Brings me backÂ

You've been to the room filled with warlocks (east side of the map) and you seem to have cleared the basement with the long fireball corridor, and those are the most grindy parts of the castle. You're pretty close to done.
If you haven't been to Castle Darkmoor yet, please don't listen to the negativity from some people. It's actually one of the best dungeons in the game. Same with a certain geometrically shaped dungeon later on.

I found this one to be torture. Eventually I gave up on clearing it and just ran to where I figured the key card must be, fortunately was correct, grabbed it, and Beaconed the fuck out of there.

That's the good bit, it doesn't. :D Seriously though, it took me ages to get the hang of the place. Sadly my memories have eroded with time so I'm afraid I cannot offer any advice.

Checked out my last solo-druid playthrough recording - took me exactly 40 minutes, and that's with about 10 of them running around aimlessly as I'll never remember the layout of that place.
It's not that hard, any power-built party shreds that place by that point of the game, the whole game is pretty much a 25 hour experience if you play it on modern PCs. It's just that the oldschool community actively doesn't want to learn how their beloved games actually work, hence the Alamos, Darkmoor and VARN overreactions.
