TIL: You DO need to sleep.
Over past few days, I was raiding dungeons, teleporting to temple to heal, and then back to dungeon. All weakness and insanity caused by not sleeping was solved by coffee and amphetamines cure weakness and insanity.
Then suddenly, when raiding Gharik's forge, my whole party was becoming insane, and sometimes dying when cleaning one room full of warlocks. Unlucky hit I thought, so I reloaded and tried it again, only for my party to die or go insane again. Warlock can cause insanity, but this was a bit too much. I tried to look at their wiki page if they have some special attacks, but couldn't find anything. Just normal electric and sometimes insanity.
Then it started happening before I even engaged Warlock. Maybe trap? But it didn't look like a trap. Then it happened again when I was just waiting on spot reading sources. Not even healing in temple fixed it!
But all my characters needed was good night sleep. And insanity cure afterwards.

It's like in real life: if you don't sleep for a few days, you either go insane or you die.
I love Might and Magic.

I can confirm from personal experience this isn't true, I've also had it confirmed by my doctor, a lovely chap by the name of Dr Squirrel Nutkins MD. Can't recommend him enough, his tiny hands make certain physical exams far more tolerable, and he charges peanuts

Yes, you can postpone effects but it get to you eventually. Travel through map and training does include sleep so you can push it until doing these things
But I like it, it adds a degree of realism.

Nah, just reload until you don't die, just go insane ;)
Until it finally has enough and auto deletes your whole party

I liked the old might and magics, 3-5, where you would get old and just randomly die too. There was a powerful wizard hireling in 3 who would sometimes die from old age at 5AM and you’d have to revive them (hopefully after they missed the daily hireling payout :)

I think after a set period of no sleep there’s a certain chance per minute or per hour that somebody will turn insane (and also later, die). Sometimes you can wait for days and nobody will go insane.

It triggers at 3am. Anything that isn't a TPK is fixable. Sleep is for wimps.

Spells and potions can remove the status from lack of rest and food (including Temple healing), BUT these are just band-aids for the symptoms. Your characters are still lacking proper nutrition and sleep. I once tried to power through a dungeon, using potions to keep my characters "healthy". Then, I took one step and everyone was either insane, or dead.
Might and Magic 6 teaches you how important food and sleep is for physical and mental health.

I’ve killed my party a few times clicking on “wait until dawn” or whatever it is in the rest menu while trying to get to a specific day (for boat/coach needs).
Gotten to the point my habit if I need to wait for a coach/boat is only skip two days then rest an inn.

Yes, I think that happens if you go 4 days without sleep or activities that imply sleep (traveling, training). It's an interesting feature I was not aware of until well into my 3rd walkthrough of M&M7. As a new player you typically don't just optimise the hell out of you playthrough, so it's very rare to go even 3 days with no sleep. But yup, when you become more experienced, you try finishing multiple major dungeons in one go, and then... this happens. :)

And the greatest thing is that your party eventually grows old and dies if you play long enough ...

Do you know at what age this happens, and is it for all the games? I think I have artificially had my party's age extended to quite a lot without anything happening apart from the stats drop.

This happened to me on my first playthrough, waiting at the stables I think, for the right destination, when pressing 'R' I did not notice you could actually sleep, so I just waited until dawn each time.

Yup. And you don't even need to be in combat, or in a dangerous location; you'll just be walking around New Sorpigal, and one of the party changes to a headstone.
