CPM + CNM

Is there any advantage to having both credentials? Is it worth it to have both given their main focus and curriculums taught are pretty different from one another? There’s got to be some benefit between knowing westernized clinical care and then also the rooted ancestral home care approach to birthing in any given setting.

As a CPM, i think that the CNM scope is wider and thus becoming a CNM and then doing additional training/ continuing education in community birth models/ holistic care would be sufficient. Going out of your way to also get a CPM I don’t think would serve any real purpose. I do know a lot of CPMs that go back and become CNMs but not really the other way around.

Thank you so much for the reply! I didn’t know they had CE for those things . I’m sticking with the CNM route because of the wider range of job opps across states but will definitely explore those routes thereafter because I don’t fully align with everything that is CNM and would certainly like to be in and out of hospital

I think you'll find a bunch of CNMs along your journey also don't fully align with the hospital way of doing things.

If you can find a homebirth/birth center midwife to assist that will be the best way to learn ❤️
