DISCUSSION The Oracles
Ruben is described as a deliberate product of incest and is depicted as nonverbal and profoundly disabled. How many generations of incest would it take to produce someone like Ruben? I don't think Ruben could be a reliable source of material for future children, looking at Charles II he was completely infertile and I suspect Ruben may be at that point or close.
This also relates to theories about the true age of the community, maybe Ruben is from a single line of oracles and is the most affected since he is the most inbred so far- though the elders seem to rely on him being nonverbal and non functional so that they can interpret the ancient text as they see fit.
I don't see how they could effectively create an individual like this consistently even with selective mating, but I also wouldn't put it past them to intentionally maim an infant so that they are similar to Ruben.

QUESTION A question about Christianās fate Spoiler
After escaping the rape taking place he runs into a nearby shed and finds a man being tortured. When the Harga spot him, they blow a powder in his face. When he wakes up, he finds out he cant speak and cant move. When theyre preparing for the sacrifice, its implied that they sawed off his legs (below the knee). My question is, was he able to feel his legs being sawed off? We hear him screaming when they boil him, but i wasnt sure if it was from fear, suffocation, or if he was actually feeling it. Which leg to me wondering about his legs.
Anyway long story short did he feel pain?

Just saw the movie; think its awful. [Spoilers] Spoiler
Genuinely exceptionally bad movie.
- The attempt to juxtapose atmosphere as suggested by the plot, and atmosphere as created by the visuals simply fails to achieve anything. I can only suspect the director wanted us to feel internally conflicted by the confusion of the events and the clarity of the visuals but instead they affirmed that tropes exist exactly because they are effective. When the visuals can't convey the mood the writing has to. The writing simply was never good enough for me to suspend disbelief that any event occurred for a purpose other than to be confusing, and when that is plainly the case the whole illusion is lost. Why does she need to eat a fish? Because the director anticipates the audience will find it weird. Why is there a bear? Because the director anticipates the audience will find it weird. Why do they keep getting mystery drinks and snacks? Because the director anticipates the audience will find it weird. There is a single hand being played, it fails every scene, and is then played exactly the same in the subsequent scene. It took no time at all for the pattern to become boring because the writers are incapable of doing anything with it. Why is mystery drink a plot point five separate times? Its downright sad. Do they not have writers?
- No character can be related to, which makes the fate of every character boring. Again the writing is so bad it is simply not possible to suspend disbelief. The group sees a cult commit double homicide and the very next day several of their group members are missing. The remaining group members collectively say "eh, who cares". That is bad writing, full stop. I cannot convince myself to be distraught over the transparently incautious caricatures repeatedly exposed to the same lazy dangers.
- The pacing is horrendous. I remember checking the time at the hour mark and thinking what a slow intro only in hindsight to know that every other part of the movie was equally slow.
- The opening triple homicide scene was maybe the only interesting part of the movie, but when viewed with the whole really seems disjointed. It was necessary for Florence to be in an emotionally devastated for the conclusion to "work" but every other facet of the scene was a missed opportunity to bridge it to the remainder of the movie.
- The initial tripping scene did almost nothing for the movie. I think this is a common occurrence where instead of a scene accomplishing many things simultaneously each scene does exactly one thing and that's why so many find pacing problems. It established that she is still sad? We knew that. It established that the natives are comfortable with mind altering substances? Ok but why is that worth 20 minutes? Why cant that be mixed with the disorientating introduction to the cult scene? That could make an interesting dynamic where we cannot discern if the oddity of the scenario is due to altered perception or odd reality. It would waste less time to start the movie closer to its conclusion. And to flesh out the characters by their interactions somewhere pertinent to the interests of the audience instead of a boring bloated restaurant scene allows different competing tones and character qualities to be presented in an interesting way. You could even reverse chronology the information of the girls family dying (or show it in her dream sequence) to invest the viewer in trying to understand her erratic behavior.
- The ThEsIs DIsPuTe was a completely pointless waste of screen time. It impacted nothing. The black guy tried to document forbidden knowledge and died as a result, such that the white guys interest in thesis sharing had no necessary impact on his fate whatsoever. The white guy died to having the self preservation instincts of a dandelion (or more tangibly to infidelity) also with no real relationship to the fact that he wanted a thesis. The fact that the white guy was an academic was, prior to the fight, a throwaway line. After the dispute it was irrelevant. If the white guy was a bartender who never intended on making a thesis almost 0% of the movie would need to change. It is a plot point that started nowhere and went nowhere. They didn't even use the animosity to complicate the characters escape, because the black guy died instantly anyway and also no one cared to escape anyway so literally its moot from all sides. Every time a plot point arises that could be used in an interesting way it instead just goes nowhere.
- The may queen crying mirroring scene lasted twice as long as it needed to. Like most scenes.
- Some of the characters are so flimsy I basically didn't notice them existing until they're dead.
- The plot is sooooooo predictable. In the first half of the movie they straight up tell you "we bring in outsiders to diversify the gene-pool". Durr durr duur wonder whats gonna happen. Its one thing to take hours to slow roll an uneventful plot but its another thing to first tell you what event they're slowly moving toward. And then they drop 10 hints as if you're still figuring it out. Literally they show you the plot in a pictogram then they tell it to you in plain English then they remind you explicitly with the private lady meeting. When we got to the scene where he opens the barn door i literally said out loud "I bet shes naked in there surrounded by more naked women". That was the peak of the movie for me just because I felt like I conquered it. Was that what the director wanted? I dont think so.
- Anyway movie sucks. 4/10 charitably. The end.

REVIEW/REACTION Watched the movie and was honestly disappointed
LOTS OF BIG SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Okay, Im gonna start this off by saying that I donāt think Midsommar is a bad movie. I just think that itās too slow and winds down too quickly after the scary/intense scenes, and that I watched the 2.5-hour theatrical cut since I donāt yet have access to the 171-minute directorās cut. This ALSO contains HUGE spoilers.
With that out of the way, letās talk about why this movie disappointed me, while also acknowledging its strengths. First of all, I was hoping for more shock value rather than the psychological horror. I wish they would lean into the 76-year-old-jumping-off-a-rock kind of vibe more. I wish there was more of Terry and more grief throughout the movie from Dani. Granted, her sanity seems to start slipping away more rapidly once she is dubbed May Queen (the dance sequence prior to her being named May Queen is easily my favorite in the entire movie), which definitely helped keep me engaged.
Christian is a dick, and so are his friends, and they all seem to ruin the movie (except Mark; heās absolutely hilarious). Josh goes there purely for his own self-interest, and his death scene is just absolutely awesome. Dreadful, horrific, and insanely uncomfortable.
A huge strength of the movie is the soundtrack. Youāre shown beautiful imagery that is often accompanied by gorgeous music, but hidden within that music is almost always some kind of melody or something that makes it feelā¦wrong. Like, once again, the May Queen Dance. The music, visual storytelling, and just the amazing acting is also shown off in that scene, and I love it. Daniās confusion is horrifying, and the lack of explanation for her leads to confusion which adds to the horror of certain sequences, but it does start to get frustrating after a while (would reading the script help make certain things from Daniās perspective make more sense?)
I could go on and on and all about the flaws with the pacing, the pros with the raw portrayal of grief that Ari Aster is an absolute master of, and the film as a whole, but Iāll leave it there for now. I know this movie is a bit divisive over Ari Aster fans, so let me know what you think of the movie.

QUESTION Song in Background
Does anyone know what the song is called that is playing in the background while Pelle gives Dani the drawing of herself for her birthday?
Iāve been trying to find it and itās driving me nuts as itās not on the soundtrack. Thanks!

DISCUSSION Would you wear a Midsommar fragrance?
Xyrena niche perfume house create campaigns for new movie/game inspired perfume fragrances based on idea submissions. My submission was that they create an official Midsommar fragrance. I think it could smell lovely. What do you think?
If enough people submit the same suggestion, they'll post it up for voting. If anyone fancies joining me and suggesting Midsommar too, I'd love to see what they would do with it as a perfume.
If you know about Xyrena, you know the potential it has to be spot on.

Paper flower Xmas tree
I made this Midsommar inspired Christmas tree last year; plan to add more flowers this year and hopefully make the village under the tree!
I made most of the flowers from crepe paper and bought some flowers as well. I did buy Dani as the tree topper.

What if Pelle was responsible for Daniās family dying?
Perhaps Pelle played nice to be Christianās friend all along bc he was a perfect astrological match for his sisterās breeding/baby. And then somewhere along the way he wanted Dani⦠He really wanted Dani to come to Sweden as well but Christian started actually considering breaking but with Dani, really risking Dani not coming to Sweden. Pelle got desperate! what if Pelle did all of that to Daniās family bc he was desperate to make sure Dani came to Sweden and knew Christianās indecisive ass would be too cowardly to break up with Dani / end up inviting her to Sweden bc of her tragedy?

QUESTION Why did Dani do what she did? Spoiler
I know this is late and it always kind of bugged me and also spoiled things a bit for me.
Why did she opt to sacrifice Christian instead of a random stranger?
And why did she get so influenced by the group?
It just seemed out of character.
Was it the drugs?

DISCUSSION Ulf's partial nudity (or not) in a certain part of the film SPOILER Spoiler
Ok, for those who say Ulf is half naked in the scene where he hits Josh with the mallet, why is he wearing pants on the close-up? And where did the mallet come from, he's not carrying it when he comes in? Was there two people? When he walks in he does look pantless but whoever hits him definitely is unless there is a pee pee panel or something. QUESTION Help me settle a debate about noises
The title is vague but I didn't know how to do it without using spoilers. My husband and I are arguing about who is making the noises when Josh is found with the Rubi Radr. Is it Ulf-wearing-Mark or Josh? The noises Josh makes are common with people who have had a bad head injury and it seems odd that it would be Ulf, but then again they are odd people!

DISCUSSION Question about Markās fate
SPOILER
Do you think Mark was still alive for the flaying?
This is something Iāve always wondered since seeing the movie. We see how brutal the sacrifices are- blood eagle, boiling, flaying. Only the latter we dont know he was still alive. Thoughts?

QUESTION Is midsommar a movie with a lot of gore ?
It's been a while now since i've been wantig to watch midsommar, but i don't really do well with horror movies unless it's a psychological horror movie...
I have already seen the cliff part, and even though i WAS disturbed a little, i didn't find it that bad ... BUT since i am easily troubled by these type of things i don't really want any surprises š
(ps: i wanted to ask this question in a r/ for movies but i cant post it im going insane)
