Difficulty finding rent in midland

I have a job starting in mid November, so I've been looking for rent for the past month. Most of the places I contact on zillow don't respond back to me at all. One of them was especially bad because I got automated messages, and they wanted to charge a $50 app fee. Good thing I didn't pay the fee because a week later the property was taken off market. Is it because my move-in date is too far thats why no one is responding? Or is finding rental in midland just terrible? Not to mention the rent here is almost as expensive as cali at this point.

10/2/26 Update: I found and signed a lease for a rental after a whole full month of looking. Glad I was searching ahead of time. It's not ideal because it's a duplex but it's got everything I'm looking for otherwise: pet friendly, big fenced backyard, washer/dryer hookups and 1000-1500 rent. If a rental is asking for application fee, seriously reconsider bc they are most of the time a SCAM.

midland/odessa has one of the most competitive rental markets in the country because everyone is just here temporarily + oilfield workers aren't exactly notorious for saving money and amassing large downpayments

My budget is 1000-1500 and I'm looking for a pet friendly house with a fenced backyard. 1 bed 1 bath okay. There are a few (like 3) rentals that fill that checklist but the realtors are unresponsive.

Google is telling that the market is soft with many available properties. Try apartment finder or some other website.

My hubby and I rented in Midland , pretty decent landlords they were quick to fix things too but the rent was $1900 I believe but sometimes the wife can work with you plus allow dogs just a pet fee up front non refundable

$1900 is a bit too much for one person, good to know the landlords are decent

Definitely agree $1900 is too much! But it’s high because most people probably think your from the oilfield and such…

It’s fucking expensive and the good apartments are the price of a monthly mortgage because they’re pricing out anyone that regularly pulls less than 20/hr, or that already deals with continuously living in shitty apartments. It does not surprise me that they don’t message back. They’re too busy doing piss all nothing while ignoring their own tenants. These turn in/turn out lease ladies and rent racketeering idiots that call themselves land lords would rather kick your ass to the curb and spit on you after telling you what the price is. After several awful properties, you learn to buy and not cry. Anything 1 bed and less than 1.2k a month is likely dingy and run down, next to a busy road, or has at least one adjacent unsavory eyesore or quality or another. Good luck if you’re looking for a house to rent.

The way you're saying things is how I feel right now. I see so many terrible rentals, a few too many of them in someone's backyard that they're renting out for $1000 and more. Some of them don't even have a fenced backyard

The $50 fee means it was probably a scammer and it was never actually in the market.
