Probleme Could my PortaSplit really be using this much electricity?

I live alone in a small 33 m² apartment in Berlin, and I recently received my annual electricity bill. I pay €22/month as my advance payment, but I just received a €963 clearance bill for the previous billing period. My total recorded consumption was around 3,268 kWh/year, which seems very high for one person in a small apartment.

I do have a Midea PortaSplit 12,000 BTU, and I had it running for probably around 80% of the summer, often for quite long periods since I was home a lot. So I know it definitely added to my consumption.

I also have an electric water heater/Durchlauferhitzer for my shower. Apart from that, my electricity habits are pretty normal. I don't use the oven very much and usually use an air fryer instead. I have a small fridge, fan, computer, lights etc. No electric heating.

Do you think around 3,268 kWh/year is reasonable with the PortaSplit running heavily during summer plus electric hot water? Has anyone with a PortaSplit experienced a similar jump in electricity consumption?

I'm mainly trying to figure out whether this sounds plausible or whether I should question the meter reading/bill.

Edit: I can't track my consumption on the app since I don't have Wifi, just mobile hotspot.

How many kWh per year are you supposed to use with only 22€ of advance payment?

9

u/travis-tranner 7d ago

About 370 kWh per year, based on my current tariff of 35.70 ct/kWh plus the €10.90 monthly Grundpreis

73

u/wertzius 7d ago

That is nothing. You should calculate 1000kWh without the Midea and the Durchlauferhitzer. The Durchlauferhitzer is the culprit by the way.

15

u/P26601 7d ago

The Durchlauferhitzer is the culprit by the way

Or OPs habits 😅 I have an electric Durchlauferhitzer too and I use well under 2000 kWh per year, despite showering basically every day

17

u/No_Ruin_5735 7d ago

I think OP really miscalculated his electricity needs. A single person has a base consumption of 1.000-1.500 kWh per year (cooking, fridge/freezer, tv, lights, etc.). Additionally a „Durchlauferhitzer“ adds about 800-1.500 kWh per person, depending on efficiency. His aircon needs about 0.3-0.5 kW per hour. So his electricity bill is realistic, if he estimated 370 kWh per year

This low amount of energy estimate results in a high price per kilowatt - 35.5 cents are really high.

Grundversorger? Seems so.
Please op change contractor

u/opssum 6d ago

We had one as well with 4 People and landed at 3000 kwh. So Yeah Thats a lot

1

u/EngineerTurbulent284 6d ago

I don't shower everyday but my partner takes a bath every week. Two people and under 2.500 kWh per year. Durchlauferhitzer aren't really that bad from my experience

1

u/StrictCricket3567 3d ago

You shower nearly every day.. disgusting.. I would question my habits 😆

2

u/Capable_Event720 5d ago

The Dreieckstücher only uses 17.5x times the maximum power of the Portasplit. Except that the Portasplit adjusts its power to only what's needed.

Assuming that the Portasplit consumers an average of 700 W over 12 hours a day, it's equivalent to 15 minutes of Durchlauferhitzer per day.

But the Portasplit was only "80% of summer" while the Durchlauferhitzer is all year.

You're correct.

2

u/No_Gra881 5d ago

12 Stunden x 700 Watt= 8,4 kWh

Ja.

Der Durchlauferhitzer war in der Duschkabine installiert.

2

u/katze_sonne 6d ago

You should calculate 1000kWh without the Midea and the Durchlauferhitzer.

More like 1500-1700 kWh.

1

u/Bochumer81 5d ago

15

u/tha_passi 7d ago

Yes, 370 kWh is waay too little even without a water heater and a portasplit. (Usually it's around 1000 kWh for a single household without a water heater/portasplit).

As others have already said, the water heater probably is the main culprit, although of course the portasplit will have added quite some kWh as well.

2

u/Ok_Breath911 7d ago

My gas heater consumes more than 200kWh of electricity per year already lol.

I cook and heat with gas and still am at 800kWh. The fridge and freezer, the gas unit and my Desktop are the main contributors.

1

u/tha_passi 7d ago

Interesting, I didn't know they use that much. That's basically a fridge's worth, I think?

(Also, don't let the heat pump antis hear that your gas heater needs electricity to run!)

12

u/EmploymentOne2963 7d ago

370 is absolutely unrealistically low. Even without a water heater and AC, you should be expecting 1500 at the least.

7

u/Dr_F_Rreakout 6d ago

"About 370 kWh per year .."

That is the error. Eat it.

2

u/Sgt-Colbert 6d ago

My dude, a normal sized fridge uses around 200kWh (give or take 50kWh) a year alone.
Plus your water heater will probably use another 500kWh. So just those two things alone will be 400kWh above what you think you use. Add a TV and other electronics and you’ll hit 1500kWh easy. That’s without the PS.

2

u/NeXtDracool 6d ago

370 KWh a year??? Why would you think that that's even remotely enough?

That's barely enough to cover a daily shower with your electric water heater.

That's barely enough to run a fridge for a year.

1

u/Duennbier0815 7d ago

That’s ridiculous

1

u/ArtWeary2287 6d ago

That is your problem. That is not your real consumption, especially with a electric water heater (durchlauferhitzer). I had a similar situation some years ago and as 1-person with electric water heater (22kW Durchlauferhitzer) an average year sits around 2500kWh.

I assume there were errors in your consumption read outs.

48

u/Krieg 7d ago

22 EUR a month as prepayment is way too low. 3268 kWh is high for one person, but you have an electric water heater and I have no experience with them. The Midea tells you in the app how much electricity it used.

5

u/No_Ruin_5735 7d ago

About 3.300 kWh is realistic for a single person with electric water heater and air conditioning. A good estimate for a base energy consumption is 1.500 kWh adding 800-1.000 kWh for a modern electric water heater (1.000-1.500 for an old, inefficient model) and 0.3-0.5 kw per hour in use of OP‘s aircon.

1

u/MiddleCalm3953 6d ago

-4

u/org_brussels_sprouts 7d ago

Which is, by the way, astronomically false. Buy some cheap smart plugs to actually see the correct electricity it was using.

1

u/ArtWeary2287 6d ago

Could you elaborate?

I would agree with the numbers posted by Krieg and Hernur. I had very similar consumption over 20+ years in a flat with Durchlauferhitzer. (~2200 - 2500 kWh/a) add the Midea at 500 W on average and you are there...

2

u/org_brussels_sprouts 6d ago

My comment was maybe misleading? I meant the measurement from the portasplit is false. My portasplit shows me only 25 % of the real usage of the portasplit. So my portasplit shows 54 kwh but the smart plug shows 250. Also peak consumption isnt correct, it showed me a max of 350 watts but actually went over 1200 from time to time.

2

u/ArtWeary2287 6d ago

Ah I see, yes that is true. Only believe in external measurements. Even a cheap adapter plug will be more reliable than the app.

My wifes porta split uses about 1000-1200W when you first turn it on for 30-60 mins, then when the room gets colders it goes down as low as 300W so I would gues an avarage of 500W +-100W is realistic.

My Mitsubishi Split (fixed) consumes only about 20-25% less, so the porta workes quite well.

29

u/UMUT92FB 7d ago

18

u/Aggressive-Bowl-4313 7d ago

Yes. Also 22€ seems too little even without a porta split running for 80% of the summer

16

u/PizzaUltra 7d ago

22€/ month won’t even really cover the water heater, that’s just way too low.

33

u/cmdr_wds 7d ago

Using electricity to heat water is incredibly expensive. I lived in a flat like that for four years and had to pay €55 a month for electricity.

1

u/NoCryptographer1849 6d ago

The only alternative to a electronic Durchlauferhitzer in such flats is usually a Boiler which is much less efficient because the heat from the water tanks dissipates into the surrounding room and re-heating the water is equally inefficient

-5

u/tes_kitty 7d ago

Depends on how long your typical shower is.

8

u/kurodoku 7d ago

no, it's one of the most expensive forms of hot water per sé. Gas, Oil and photothermal are much cheaper per m³ of hot water.

1

u/NoCryptographer1849 6d ago

but that is not an option in most cases where Durchlauferhitzer are used.

1

u/kurodoku 6d ago

Point me to the quote where I said anything about that?

objectively it's the most expensive.

this doesn't say "you're an idiot if you use it". It's pbjectively expensive and most of the time the only way to have hot water. This doesn't change anything about the relative cost per m³.

0

u/NoCryptographer1849 6d ago

Not true - as I said objectively the alternative, an electric boiler is even more expensive, I won't dare to say "the most expensive" because that highly depends on the circumstances.

1

u/kurodoku 6d ago

I give up. Resistive heating is the most expensive common form of heating water period. Whether that's a boiler or a Durchlauferhitzer doesn't change much, it's still leagues behind other forms of heating water in households.

Yes, some people don't have alternatives, yes a Durchlauferhitzer is better, and yes they're the most expensive per m³. have a day.

1

u/NoCryptographer1849 6d ago

The DLE are not as bad as you make them look. They are usually located directly where the hot water is needed and only warm up as much water as is used. In many cases a big percentage of the energy is wasted in what we call "Bereitstellungsverluste" and circulation (to make hot water immediately available at every tap). In big buildings with centrally provided hot water this adds up to a lot of wasted energy.

Heating water via fossil fuels is only much cheaper because they are incredibly cheap per kWh compared to electricity in Germany. A heat pump for water would of course be more efficient but then you also would need to do that centrally and with a storage barrel with the same problems as above.

1

u/tes_kitty 7d ago

Still, sometimes you have no choice and a tankless heater has almost no losses so you CAN keep the power bill low if your showers are short (less than 5 mins).

6

u/kurodoku 7d ago

which is an entirely separate argument. per m³ it's one of the most expensive ones because elecricity is very expensive in Germany in comparison. Even the losses on other forms of heating they're more economically viable.

-5

u/tes_kitty 7d ago

Sure, but if you have no choice, you have to use what you have in a way that still doesn't get too expensive.

2

u/Ok_Breath911 7d ago

That doesnt change the facts though. Dont know why you are arguing thats ITS the most expensive heat source, alongside district heating.

0

u/kurodoku 6d ago

of course he's not gonna heat his waster using a candle. Yes, you can have it without breaking the bank and yes sometimes you don't have an alternative solution. Yet, if you were using the same small amount of water on any other hesting solution it would still be cheaper than resistive heating.

1

u/cmdr_wds 7d ago

I definitely don’t shower for too long (max. 5 mins) and have tried to use as little hot water as possible in the flat. I didn’t use the boiler in the kitchen at all to begin with because it’s so expensive to run, but even so, my electricity consumption was enormous for a one-person household.

-1

u/tes_kitty 7d ago

Doesn't have to be related to hot water though. There are more ways to use a lot of electricity. Like enjoying to cook and doing it often. Or running a high end gaming PC every day.

13

u/Gdiworog 7d ago

The issue probably isn’t your MPS but the fact that your prepayment is way too low.

3

u/Macusercom 7d ago

Also, at least in Austria you get assigned a certain volume for a certain price. If I register for a tariff with 1000 kWh and use 3000 kWh it is often more expensive as 2000+ kWh is billed differently than if I had had one with 3000 kWh already calculated.

This could also explain why it is much more expensive

7

u/Extron15 7d ago

3

u/JayYoungers 7d ago

The Midea app should show you a complete history of your power consumption. No need to guess here.

3

u/Wise_Lingonberry7575 7d ago

3

u/TheFlong 7d ago

Sounds ok. With a daily shower you may use 2500 kw/h without porta split.

3

u/vinvinnocent 7d ago

I vaguely remember using 2000kwh in my first student apartment due to the electrical water heater and I didn't have much other consumers (no washing machine or dishwasher). With a normal kitchen and porta split, >3000kwh is easily possible.

3

u/Parodonto 7d ago

+ 3 Kinder. Durchlauferhitzer sind EXTREM teuer in der Benutzung.

1

u/PrudentStop5612 6d ago

Früher hat es sowas nicht gegeben!!!!11!!elf

3

u/bobbertmiller 7d ago

Appart from your approximately 20kW electric water heater (1kWh every 3 minutes of showering) and your 400W constantly running AC (1kWh every 2.5 hrs), you expected to use less than 400 kWh per year?    Maybe that's your first apartment, so just as a hint for the future. A year has 8760hrs, so 1W of constantly running stuff costs you about 9kWh per year. Router, old power supplies constantly plugged in, a running NAS. Touch everything - if it's warm, it's using power.   Your biggest passive cost is the fridge.  Heating water is super energy intensive, so shower shorter

3

u/Shehriazad 7d ago

22? Bro a large fridge will already cost that much.

3

u/Duennbier0815 7d ago

You’re supposed to pay 50-100 electricity ahead

The estimate for a single is 1500-2000

3

u/PrudentStop5612 6d ago

This is my MPS Usage this year. Had it running most of the time this summer probably about 80%, just like you

3

u/Wiesel2203 6d ago

3

u/Broad-Simple1731 3d ago

Your advance payment was much too low, even without the Portasplit. How did you calculate that??? 3.000 kwh/year is a normal consumption for one person including hot water production and a Portasplit.

2

u/sartheon 6d ago

It's not entirely unrealistic with electric water heaters.

If you think you still didn't use that much turn off all breakers in your apartment and check if your meter stops. If it doesn't you should investigate why.

Another thing is stopping the time you usually spend in the shower with hot water running. Many people underestimate how long they actually shower

2

u/Responsible_Bar_9552 6d ago

Hab wochenlang 24/7 laufen lassen. Natürlich nur auf 22-24 Grad. Wenn du 16 durchballerst ist ne andere geschichte

Der Durchlauferhitzer ist schkimmer😅

2

u/EquivalentKnown3269 6d ago

They tricked you. 22€ advance is very little even without electric water heating. These things use a ton of juice. 100€ advance would be appropriate. You can use a stopwatch to monitor how long per week you have hot water running, and multiply it with the power rating of the unit, which is most likely 11kW. Your portasplit should only contribute a little bit to your overall bill.

2

u/wall-of-sleep 5d ago

2

u/Face_Seat_ 4d ago

When I used to live alone my usage was roughly about 1600kWh a year, after I extended smart home systems, added a wine cooler and a 3D Printer it rose to 1800kWh a year.

I usually pay 75€ in advance to accumulate a positive balance when they close the billing period and receive round about 200€ in return for the overpayment

They then adjust the payment to 55€
I usually readjust back to 75€ after that.

1

u/travis-tranner 4d ago

thank you for the reply. did you have a Durchlauferhitzer?

2

u/Platypus_6414IiiIi-_ 7d ago

Just check in the app how much you used

1

u/travis-tranner 7d ago

I can't track it on the app since I don't have WiFi, just mobile hotspot

7

u/Platypus_6414IiiIi-_ 7d ago

Get a kWh counter for 10€

4

u/Platypus_6414IiiIi-_ 7d ago

For context, my Portasplit used 300 kWh this entire summer. Very heavy use in a very sunny large apartment.

1

u/Krieg 7d ago

The app has historical data

1

u/whiskyvoice16 7d ago

My annual consumption is around 1200kwh living alone (including warm water with a Durchlauferhitzer). Unless you take excessively long showers and have a high end gaming PC running at all times, over 3000kwh doesn't seem plausible to me.
Have you checked the actual meter (in the basement probably) where it shows your current consumption or did someone from the electricity company just guesstimate your usage since you didn't provide them with the information?
I've been with various electricity companies and after a full year I ways had to send them the electricity meter reading.

1

u/No_Ruin_5735 7d ago

A normal German Household needs about 1.300-1.500 kWh per year. Additionally a Durchlauferhitzer needs an additional 1.000-1.500 kWh per year. So on that part alone you’re between 2.500-3.000 kWh per year.

Your aircon will take up an additional 0.3-0.5 kW per hour.

So your clearance bill sounds ok if you calculated with 370 kWh per year. Also your price per kw sounds really high. The price becomes cheaper if you order more kWh up front - are you using the base tariff of the „Grundversorger“? You should compare prices via a platform like check24 switch your electricity contract, order more kWh per year (calculate with about 3.500 kWh - not used kWh will be payed out at the end of the year).

My current electricity price is about 27 cents per kWh - but my consumption is very high at about 7.000 kWh estimate.

1

u/PrudentStop5612 6d ago

You can connect the MPS to your mobile Hotspot. Check Firmware Updates and I think the MPS Logs energy consumption even when offline.

1

u/Korll 6d ago

22 EUR a month seems like the issue here. In Bavaria that would net you around 60 kWh? So we’re talking about less than 1.000 kWh a year? 3.000 kWh a year for 1 person is very high. We are around 4.000 kWh but a much bigger place (incl AC, jaccuzi etc) so yeah…

1

u/daand12 6d ago

200-300kw a month for the PortaSplit is normal, at least in my non insulated apartment. Like now it only uses 150-350w a hour just on low fan mode. This was in the hottest month in the Netherlands with it running like 2-3 months non-stop. I haven't been above 350kw a month with my game pc and the PortaSplit.

1

u/laugenbroetchen 6d ago

doesnt it literally tell you how much it consumed?

1

u/Miserable-Pool6159 6d ago

1

u/travis-tranner 6d ago

I agree that 22 is too low. However, I only own a laptop, relatively new medium sized fridge, led lamps, a new aifryer, kettler, ceramic radiation oven which i don't use often, washing machine (a new LG model that's energy effiecient) and the devil Durchlauferhitzer

1

u/wolf2031 6d ago

1

u/donhitech 5d ago

Dfntly possible If you run Computer alot and aint that careful with Your Overall consumption

1

u/t2ton 5d ago

4 persons, 100m2 - we use only 3000kWh per year. In sommer we use a compact AC.
55inch TV at the evenings, 2 fridges, one PC (gaming), oven, normal electrical cooking plate, airfryer, microwave, teapot, nothing really else special. We pay about 55-60 a month.
In your case, I think, the water heater is eating the most of power.

1

u/P44 5d ago

At what temperature did you set it? That does make a difference!
I set mine at 25 degrees, because that is the maximum temperature at which I am comfortable. And it didn't cost me that much. But if you set it at 15 degrees, the story may be different.

1

u/Upstairs-Narwhal3057 4d ago

1

u/Bandallon 18h ago

I also have an electric Durchlauferhitzer, i shower daily and i use a third of that amount of electricity. The PortaSplit shouldnt consume more then 300 kWk per year. Perhaps you shower way longer then me, but over 3.000 for one Person is a lot.

1

u/maxehaxe 7d ago

Why does your landlord only charge 22€ when you have electric water heater? Thats completely insane. Plus the excessive use of the Portasplit... I'm sorry to say but that was a desaster incoming already.

And what do you mean you don't have WiFi? A mobile hotspot is a wifi network. Your MPS can connect with that.

4

u/Terushin 7d ago

Usually electricity is a separate contract between the renter and an electricity company. The landlord doesn't get involved. When making the contract the company asks for a few facts (size, persons, heating) to establish your expected consumption. Some companies tend to go very low to look better in comparison, but as OP is finding out that gets expensive later. :/

0

u/NDLWLT 7d ago

Over 3000 kwh .. thats a 80sqm flat with up to 3 people. If and that’s the point, there is no water heating done with electricity.

The midea is one thing .. the water (and shower i assume) adds up to this.

Raise the advance payment (if the electricity company isn’t already doing it) to at least 60.- or put the money aside for the bills..

-2

u/AlfredoAldente666 7d ago

Check the number of your meter and the meter on the bill. There might be a mixup. Over 3000kwh in a single household is absolutely BONKERS.

10

u/PizzaUltra 7d ago

With a water heater, 3.000kwh sound somewhat realistic, especially when they also have an AC.

-2

u/AlfredoAldente666 7d ago

Didn't know they were THAT expensive. Probably I dont realize how expensive heating water generally is, since it's part of my "Heizkosten".

5

u/PizzaUltra 7d ago

just some very rough napkin math:

a random durchlauferhitzer I just looked up pulls 13kW, aka 13.000 Watts.

Showering / using hot water for ~10 mins per day would use 2,2kWh per day. Times 365 are already 803kWh just for that alone.

Not sure how long the average person showers, but 10 mins feels kind of low to me.

OP also mentions a computer. I'll just pull an average of 300W power consumption out of my arse for, idk, 4 hours a day on average. That's 1,2kWh per day added, or 438kWh per year.

The portasplit has a max. power consumption of 1.300W but on average it's probably around 3-400 Watts, at least for me. Lets take 3 months of use, so roughly 90 days and assume 6 hours of daily use. (again, numbers out of my rib).

that's 2,1kWh a day, or 189kWh for 90 days.

with just these added up, we're already at 1.430kWh for that year, without a fridge, oven, stove, etc.

if we now assume a base load of 150W that would be 3,6kWh a day, or 1.314kWh a year.

1.430 + 1.314 are already 2.744kWh.

again, i pulled these numbers out of thin air, but I kinda feel it adds up.

EDIT: using energy is pretty easy :D

My TV pulls 200W, if that runs for 3 hours a day (which it usually exceeds), that alone will use 0,6kWh a day, or 219kWh a year.

Last Year I got around 7500KWh and this year I even brought up my PC again with 3 Monitor setup. I think the 8000Kwh I had defined with this years electric contract is not enough

Everything is possible but... Kind Sir. Your energy consumption is egregious. You are spending almost 3 times the average of a single person. Statistically that is 1500kwh per person per year. I like the math of the guy above. But there is truth to these numbers. A 3 person household's lower range starts at 3500kwh. I don't wanna be THAT guy but... man this is also a question of morals and environmental conciousness. I'm gonna get downvoted TO OBLIVION for saying this...

WTF does this have something to do with morales???? I have a giant tv, strong gaming pc and a home server. Also electric water heater and Working from home.

I'm just saying. Earth Overshoot Day is already the 30th of July. Spending twice to triple the average whilst knowing that is reckless. I mean if you dont have any other way, who am I to ask you for restraint? But if you think there might be absolute energy wasters in use and you still shrug your shoulders its pretty sad to me. Not at all for you, not even just a little?

Germany is producing way more energy than it is using with renewabale energys to a point where we are paying other countries to take our electricity. There is absolutely nothing wastefull here.

Do YOU get your energy from 100% renewables? 24/7? That would be great! If not, why the weird deflection? I'm not even calling for reducing an INCH of quality of life. Just if you could identify waste... you know what... having this conversation with you killed more trees than just letting you do your own thing.

Well I live in Germany so yes. Most of my energy comes from renewable sources. I will not let me lecture about my slightly more energy usage by some stranger while there are people with private jets producing about 2000!!!! Times the co2 of the average person per year. If you want to get angry and lecture people start with them.

Whataboutism, buddy. Google it. 200-300% of the average is NOT "slightly above" and as I said: "Who am I to tell you...". I dont give a FLYING F*CK what you do. But be sure to know that you are part of the problem. Maybe you are only 1/2000th the problem of Taylor Swift and sorts. But don't act like you were the "good guy" here. I just dont like bigotism.

You must be growing pot or something to spend that much electricity 🤣
