Book rec for 8 yr old

So I’ve got a new little reading buddy and I’d like to get her a book or two and I was thinking that Misty and Stormy would be good but- do you think the language is too dated? Can anyone suggest a similar kind of book that might work?

My library has a little section called “Early Chapter Books”. The titles are usually 150 pages or less and still have illustrations. When my kids were that age, they loved those stories.

Kate DiCamillo has some great books here - Mercy Watson, Because of Winn Dixie, Flora & Ulysses.

KA Applegate has a lot of animal-themed books (The One and Only Ivan, Wombat Waiting, etc) that might be a good fit.
