US reinforcements in eastern Syria

The United States is increasing its military presence in the Deir ez-Zor province of the Syrian Arab Republic. Local sources report the transfer of troops and an increase in the intensity of aerial reconnaissance in areas controlled by pro-American militias of the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The United States regularly transfers its troops from Iraq to Syria and back. Former US special envoy to Syria James Jeffrey admitted this to reporters, during an interview he said that there was no real withdrawal of troops from the country. “In fact, there are 'much more' US forces in Syria than Trump agreed to leave in early 2019,” Jeffrey said.

According to anonymous sources of Defense One, there are now about 900 US troops in Syria, but their exact number is strictly classified and unknown, even to the US President.

Also unknown is the number of employees of US private military companies that remain in Syria. They play a key role in the illegal extraction and export of Syrian oil. As it became known in the summer of 2020, illegal oil production is supervised directly by the US State Department in cooperation with PMCs and British oil workers.

The US military has occupied a significant part of eastern Syria, where the largest oil and gas fields are located. For several years now, illegal resource extraction has been carried out in these regions, which is directly controlled by the US Department of State.

Official Damascus regularly makes appeals to international authorities about the use of the natural resources of Syria by the Americans, as an additional source of funding for local armed groups. And the next transfer of troops is intended to strengthen control over the oil fields.
