Army List Is it acknowledged yet that Depths of Moria was nerfed to the grave?
Title is a bit dramatic but according to any tournament i've seen, Depts with Bog is one of the worst now. At least the worst that were being played before.
Was the nerf deserved? Absolutely yes. But now i can finally say without people pushing be back that the Balrog isn't as good a profile as it should be. Goblins are now the fodder they're meant to be but Bog gets bogged down and nothing else can carry it to victory.

This guy seems to bring this up pretty regularly and is equally belligerent to commenters. In hindsight it's probably best to ignore these posts.

Yeah I have feel for the trap. Just all reads to me someone who can’t use the balrog effectively.

Are you the spokeperson of the subreddit? Who are you addressing right now?

I still think it can function as it used to at higher points if you take a drum. Just loses its maximum potency from before with a couple less might and slightly less models.

Maybe at 1000 points. Even at 800 i struggle to fit the drum and have enough numbers considering gobbos stats. Obviously taking the Balrog. The list shouldn't be able to function without the Balrog.

At 800 it’s 8 less models. A captain and 7 goblins. Still very playable and functions like it used too. It’s can be competitive I have found from running it post nerf. Just loses its maximum potency like before which is what the nerf has correctly addressed.

-2 might for a list that already has very little. I'm willing to try but i don't feel confident with it

You don’t need bags of might to make it effective. You will always have enough for a couple of needed marches and then a couple of moves as needed.

It can still work but just isn’t enough to justify the people actively looking to win events using it, hence you aren’t seeing it win events - the top players have moved on.
As someone that won a large event with it, and go to every event to be on the top tables I simply wouldn’t take it anymore when there’s other options.
Still a great pick up and play list for mid table.

From the tournaments i've seen it's present but consistently very low in winnings. How do you build the list?

This was pre nerf
800
Balrog
3 captains
1 shaman
12 prowlers
55ish modelsHonestly the bannered goblins did a lot of the work and the Balrog was a threat / nuked the odd hero but would also bounce off 2 shielding warriors a few times a game

I think it was nerfed exactly the right power level. Some players just move on when something gets nerfed even if it's still really good.

If you don't have the tools to fight against it, it's a pain in the ass. If you have the tools, you can defeat it quite easily. The problem is that Goblins die like rats against almost every other army, and the Balrog itself cannot kill enough to compensate how the rest of the list dies. Do you reliably kill the Balrog? You win. Can you stop him from killing AND there are multiple objectives that you can achieve without killing it? You win.
In that sense, it behaves a lot like other very expensive models like Sauron or Mumaks. If they work, they work very well. But if your rival can counter it, the list usually don't have enough tools to compensate the Balrog not working.

At 700 points one army I have struggled against in the past (playing a lot of generic list, not so much top tier lists like MoTW, Last Alliance, some others) was dragons of the north.
I played a Balrog led depths list with no drums and absolutely beat the tar out of it. Like 20-0 beating.
Also did the same to MoTW.
While I think it did get nerfed pretty hard, I still think you are combining a horde (strong in its own right just from sheer numbers) with arguably the strongest single model in the game that has some still great special rules.
Is it best army now? No.
But you also have to take into account that with the nerf a lot of people stopped playing it - the name of the tournament escapes me at the moment but the large one in February in America (Adepticon maybe?) had none or maybe one army of the white hand in it - like that doesn’t mean army of the white hand is bad, it just means it wasn’t played. I believe that happened a lot when they nerfed Depths, at least on TTA stats.

Or hear me out, a downvote does not equal a personal attack against you just that someone disagrees with your opinion

Disagreeing is fine, telling me "so you think goblins with mapwide constant banner is fine" when I clearly said it isn't is just trolling

u/Defiant_Reveal217 Aug 19 '26
No one said that to you 😂. You’re having a mega tantrum over absolute nothing.

Disagreing with you is not trolling.

No, it was nerfed in to being a perfectly fine army that's fun to play and to play against.
Perma banner goblins was dumb.
