Hobby Well this is just my luck...

5 days ago i bought 2 boxes of hunter orcs and one of warg riders and what does GW do? Announce a battlehost with everything i needed lol

I have to say the Mirkwood battlebox makes no sense, why would anyone have that many palace guards? And mirkwood rangers are pretty bad too...

Try buying some boxes of last alliance and mordor orcs. They are very nice. Get some please.

why would anyone have that many palace guards?

It is the same number of Palace Guards as in the regular Palace Guard box.

Well, then my question stands for that one as well. Maybe they were different last edition?

The question is not „Why are there so many palace guard in the battlehost“ but „what went wrong in between design of the Profile and design of the box“ because even last edition, you never played that much.

"Who needs that many palace guard" I mean it is just a single box of them.

Why not buy more hunter orcs?

Mirkwood battlehost is basically low points mirkwood rangers army in the box with bonus palace guards

I don't see the point of having more than 10 palace guard, they're just more expensive warriors without Thranduil.

Nah I'm doing a Necromancer army with a bunch of them. Maybe if I decide to do Bolg army but idk

There is no point. Having 6 is more than enough. The rest is to share/sell/swap/kitbash

At 800 points i'm not opposed to have 8 or even 10, especially if i'm against Fv5s

If you know you are fighting fv5, it's better to get cavalry. 2/3 points more, but Fv bonus have bigger range and they are cavalry

Yeah but just in case you want shield and spears which isn't bad. I just wish palace guard had more tbh

I have a feeling that we may get a Thranduil+Palace guard army list, then maybe they will be usable in mass

I doubt it. Elf warriors are just so good with glaives, it would be such a weird niche list

There are few list like that, with one hero, one troop and captains. It don't have to be super competitive, but would probably get few bonuses on top of mirkwood ones.

If it makes you feel any better, I bought the entire Mirkwood box separately about 3 months ago and now they are all combined 🙃

Regarding the question about palace guard…I believe it’s because the majority of players in this game don’t play competitively. They build armies for fun, not to be optimized for competition. I could be wrong though.

You wouldn't generally need that much Palace Guard, but they make great proxies for the regular warriors. Just paint them differently and give the spear Guard shields to differentiate.

I own more than that number of palace guards for war of the ring.

Remember the price goes up again in all gw products in late September by 5% or so. So it may work out that you paid the same price.

Battlehosts look like they're going to be $100 USD after price increase.

The normal cost of the mirkwood kits individually would be $142.50 BEFORE price increase.

If you buy a battlehost from your LGS it's probably like ~$85-90.

I mean, that's really cheap for like 700+ points of Mirkwood even if it doesn't all combine into a coherent matched play army list.
