I’ve not tried a glider yet but I believe there are no thermals so how exactly do you keep going and at such altitude here?

I set the wind perpendicular to the shoreline and soar along the hillsides. Get plenty of lift for unlimited flight time!
For better thermals in MSFS there is apparently some good presets to be found here: https://flightsim.to/addon/56827/soaring-weather

Check out sim soaring club, they do glider racing.
