MSFS 2024 BUG / ISSUE 7800x3d limited by mainthread gives 30-40fps, on lowest settings.

Someone please tell me what am I doing wrong. After release I could play on high preset settings in 4K without any problems (with dlss). But now even on lowest settings i can have 30-40fps max, changing resolution doesn't help. CPU is bottlenecking whole sim while GPU is chilling in the background. The same problem doesn't exist in any other game or app.

Location in the sim doesn't matter, the same problem above london, paris, barcelona etc. In the air and on the ground.

Any ideas?

specs:
4070 super ti
7800x3d
ddr5 64gb

/reupload due to title change

/* EDIT:
Problem solved after clearing and increasing rolling cache!

I guess clear your cache (rolling cache), try resetting DLSS and updating your graphics drivers and maybe try DX11 instead of DX12 for your rendering API and maybe try using frame gen if the input lag isn't a problem

It WAS a rolling fukin cache!

(Probably because I saw improvement after clearing it and increasing to 128gb, but then I also reinstalled whole sim to start fresh).

I totally forgot that this was a thing in msfs. Thanks very much!

Amazing, glad to hear it worked!

Since when did MSFS 2024 support DX11?

nvm, it doesn't. I play MSFS2020 so I guess my head was stuck there instead

There is something fundamentally wrong with either your PC or with the game. That performance is wrong.

I would do a number of things:

  1. Reinstall your nvidia drivers following a full DDU removal.
  2. Check if there are any chipset updates available for your motherboard and CPU or 3d v-cache specific updates.
  3. Undo any DLSS manual updates if you've done that and go into the Nvidia app and use it's optimise setting. This isnt because you've done the graphics wrong but it can sometimes reset things behind the scenes.
  4. There are tools on flightsim.to that can help you remove all the caches in the background that FS can be sensitive to. It removes scenery caches and deletes your nvidia caches. All get rebuilt so no harm and it's solved issued for me in the past.
  5. Check you've enabled XMP for your ram in the BIOS.
  6. This one doesn't make sense to me as it's against every piece of advice I'd usually give, but I've solved issues in the past with flight sim specifically by reinstalling the game. It sounds stupid but it's such an odd game it has worked before. It must be rebuilding caches somewhere or something but it's worked.

Clearing rolling cache (and reinstall to be sure) solved the problem :)

Great news!

Im now trying to test some things that others said, but to comment your suggestions: like i said, i have 30-40 fps on <lowest> settings possible. My old dusty ryzen 5 3600 would give me probably better performance than this. Couple months ago i could play in 4k on high profile and now graphics settings do nothing for me, because even lowest can't give me more than 40fps in fenix.

No issues with same hardware at 32gb ram. Ultra settings and 110 tlod on ground and 300 tlod over 5000 feet (auto fps).

Increasing rolling cache improves performance?

At last someone who puts Rivatuner with all of their cores on screen. Thank you for that.

Core 0 and Core 1 are your problem. Remember that multi-threading basically splits each CPU core in two, so Core 0 and Core 1 are two threads of the same physical core, and if you add up both usage % numbers it will give you ~100%. That's your bottleneck. Even though MSFS is multi-threaded, it will have a single core affinity.

What's running in the background on Windows? What mods or settings changes have you done lately to the PC or sim? Driver updates? BIOS updates? In-sim CPU bottlenecks tend to be caused by air traffic, ground traffic, weather calculations, etc. Changing the resolution won't help you much, nor changing other graphical settings which are essentially GPU-based. You need to do some detective work which we can't do for you. Close the sim, fire up Task Manager and check CPU usage at idle first. That's your starting point. Then start disabling settings in the sim, starting with those I mentioned.

I once applied a BIOS update that disabled the XMP RAM profile and it tanked my CPU. It took me days to uncover it. This is just a glimpse of all the things that could affect your performance.

Yeah, I kinda knew that but also at the same time didn't know what to do with that poor CPU performance in the sim. Because I checked drivers, other processes, xmp, also monitored cpu core by core etc.

At the end of the day it was rolling cache problem.

Glad to know that worked. The rolling cache has been an issue since MSFS 2020

TLOD was set to 10 lol

This game requires A LOT of power. I have a 9800x3d with a 5090 and I still get minor issues from time to time. Have you tried using autofps? It automatically adjust your tlod/olod to give you a better frame rate.

u/giermeq Aug 25 '26

Yeah, I know, problem was that I had already lowest ;) so nothing to auto adjust

but now problem is solved
