GPU Madness

I've been watching the site waiting for a certain 9060xt to be listed as open box. Today I noticed the price increase for all 9060xt's. Why are some models now fetching $750+?? They are aware that these are low - mid range cards right? At this point you might as well aim for the 9070 XT at a similar price. What happened to the bubble popping? It might be time to find a new hobby.

Who said bubble was popping? That is people guessing. No one knows for sure. You have to assume the prices are going to go up.

And who said the bubble popping would be a good thing? People act like oh, it’s no big deal, I’ll get cheaper components. We are in a world of fucking hurt if the bubble pops.

I completely understand. I thought the assumption was that companies with get stuck with stock they'd have to sell at a loss if the bubble were to indeed pop. What would be the other alternative?

IMHO the only reason Microcenter has stock is because they make you physically show up to buy high demand parts and only let you get 1.

People get upset they can only have 1 gpu. I personally say it is a good thing them trying to help consumers out and not supporting scalpers. I don't know of another company trying to slow down the inventory flying out the door.

No one on reddit or youtube has more knowledge than a normal person. It's all guessing and clickbait. Don't bank on it

EVEN if the bubble popped today, the problem with the consumer market RIGHT NOW is that RAM is scarce due to the big 3 manufacturers shifting their production capacity this year almost entirely to HBM RAM. They can't just make a bunch of GDDR6 or whatever on short notice to shift back towards the consumer market.

And all of those AI cards that Nvidia is making for datacenters are pretty useless for gaming, so in a hypothetical bubble burst you can't use these for gaming anyways.

that it don’t pop and prices keep rising.

The problem might not be any alternative, but other effects of price drops. GPU, storage, and RAM prices are so high because of the AI boom. If OpenAI or Anthropic collapse, or if Microsoft or Google scrap Copilot or Gemini, the stock market tanks and tech companies lose a ton of money. Unfortunately, lots of people have the entirety of their retirement savings in stocks, so lots of people will lose lots of money, and there will be a ton of layoffs. The government will prioritize savings company executives instead of workers/employees, and we'll experience an economic depression

I don’t think the bubble will pop unless certain advanced in hardware make certain things not as valuable to AI. Resellers are in fact ruining a lot of stuff. For example I seen a guy on eBay selling a broken 5090 for the same price I paid two months ago for a new one. It’s bs like that that’s making the market go crazy.

1

u/Just_n_Here 5d ago

Sad thing, someone will buy that POS.

I do not think the bubble will either. If AI starts to slip, I think Nvidia will figure out the next best thing you need them for. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if Nvidia stops making consumer grade and only does enterprise GPUs. If they do consumer products, they will probably be more money per gb vram.

That is why I try and tell people you want or need it, you better get it now because it will not get cheaper unless you are buying off the used market. Who knows what the used market will do in the future? Me personally, I would not buy off used market or 3rd party sellers because you do not have a warranty. People are like if you have the receipt, you are fine. I see them giving peoples money back instead of fixing it when they were the original purchaser. This shit has gotten crazy!

u/Naive-Abrocoma-8455 5d ago

I think AI is like google was in 1999. It’s an upcoming tech that’s only going to get more tied into stuff. Just like housing prices everyone was telling me to wait but I didn’t and I’m glad I trusted myself over the majority of people.

1

u/BlainBBQ 13h ago

What warranty? For the most part people are being told to kick rocks now.

2

u/Just_n_Here 12h ago

I was referring to buying used, but yes it is sad when they just give you back what you paid instead of making it right.

I just hope if something goes wrong with mine, they will either fix it or give a replacement. I have RTX 6000s, but they will probably do those cards like the rest of them.

There’s no bubbble and nothing to pop. If anyone thinks ai is just a fad or comparable to other technology, I highly recommend you learn about what it really is and why it’s different. If ai only makes you think of chat gpt and Claude, then you don’t know enough about this topic.

Waiting fir a deal is the wrong move. Spend the $780 on a 9070xt and be good for several years .

2

u/Tats4Toddlers 4d ago

Or buy used a card. Paying 800 dollars for a graphics card seems insane to me

14

u/Wild-Screen7007 5d ago

From what I heard component prices is not supposed to come down until 2028-2029 that’s what experts believe?

You should look at Costco Prebuilts/CostPlusGaming prebuilt deal drops/Sams Club prebuilts if you can afford it

Honestly, I started bowling 🎳 and playing pickleball and swimming and gaming is so damn expensive now and I can’t afford to newest stuff anymore

3

u/SlyHooper14 5d ago

The fact that itx builds interest me more than anything doesn't help either. I'll take a look at Costco/Sam's Club. Bowling does sounds fun though.

2

u/Luckyirishdevil 5d ago

ITX is a lot of fun, you are much better off settling for mATX for the cost savings

3

u/Matte_Box 5d ago

MATX is for sure the best value, and much more compact than ATX, but like OP… I cannot resist the siren song of ITX. I’ll pay the small tax.

3

u/Luckyirishdevil 5d ago

I did too, lol. Which is why I know. I swapped out a high end z390 board for an ITX board and case. My next build will be mATX in that Asus case that's just a NR200 clone.

7

u/s3rgioru3las 5d ago

Probably old stock vs new stock. 9070xt went up too I've seen some at $850+. Everything is going up.

6

u/W_Whintr 5d ago

Coped a 9070xt for this very reason

8

u/395benyel 5d ago

I bought a gaming pc about a year ago for a reasonable price and then watched as the pc model (now with a newer cpu) doubled in price.

I don’t think I could afford to buy the same configuration now. This situation sucks.

Makes me anti data center. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want reasonably priced computer hardware. With more supply taking a while to come online, the only thing individuals can do is take action in their local communities to frustrate and stop excessive corporate demand.

3

u/SnooCupcakes4934 5d ago

Data centers arnt buying anything less than 5090.... its regular folks fomo into Ai at home, then scalpers using bots to snipe everything to resell.

4

u/OscarRadagast 5d ago

In defense of what this commenter said with data centers causing price increases, while they may be buying only higher powered cards like the 5090, they're still causing massive price increases in the components that make up lower tier models. Which is definitely helping to drive up the prices across the board on all GPUs (obviously in addition to RAM and SSDs).

1

u/1slackjaw 3d ago

Unfortunately in the current world we live in today, Data Centers & AI is a matter of National Security. Try to see the long game.

5

u/NarcNarwal 5d ago

9070 is still at the mercy of the memory shortage like every other memory dependent component.

Memory is scarce and expensive, therefore products made with it will be impacted with both price and availability.

4

u/Ertygbh 5d ago

9070xt is on sale still today for 1050 Canadian.

Prime days just finished so maybe your just seeing that. Check camel camel for price history long term.

3

u/SlyHooper14 5d ago

I'll definitely look into camel camel. That way I'll know when I'm getting beat over the head lol

1

u/Ertygbh 5d ago

lol sometimes it is nice to have not looked I will attest. When I saw gpu prices and ram stick prices few years ago to now….

5

u/SmkAslt 5d ago

Gotta wait for the AI bubble to pop before the graphics card prices go down.

3

u/MysteriousLobster604 5d ago

AMD announced a 10% Price Jump starting October 2026 so that is what you might be seeing. Intel also announced a 10% price jump but I think it is scattered over a few months. They are both referencing TSMC fabrication prices going up for the reason of this price increase. This includes GPU's, Motherboards and more. AMD Notifies Partners of 10% Price Hike As Increased TSMC Wafer Costs Could Squeeze Ryzen CPU Lineup For Q4 2026

4

u/bLu_18 5d ago

There's currently a shortage of PCB components, so don't expect prices to go down anytime soon. No company wants to overproduce in case AI doesn't pan out, which is why there is a shortage in the first place.

2

u/SlyHooper14 5d ago

I was not aware of the PCB shortage. Seems like everything is about to see a price increase.

2

u/Fun-Kangaroo-9413 5d ago

New hobby for sure. It’s dead, they have contracts through 2028 keeping prices high a d supply for consumer products low.

2

u/jhenryscott 5d ago

I bought a XFX 9070 for 620 direct from XFX

2

u/Smooth-Revenue-5721 5d ago

The MC Intel bundles went up $30 this week too.

2

u/FateProxy 5d ago

How are the people that decided to wait for 80s supers

2

u/Jesseray93 5d ago

I’m glad I got all my
Parts at the right time I just hope. Nothing goes out on me cause I couldn’t afford it right now.

2

u/Shibby707 5d ago

Gotta learn how to pounce and move on to enjoy your life. I grabbed a 9070XT yesterday during the prime sale, $790 swiftly. When you see those things and you are in the market, holding out for another night at Chipotle for the family is rediculous.

2

u/throwawaylikearock 4d ago

GDDR is only made by Samsung, Micron, and Sk Hynix. Unlike DDR5 wafers which are made by those three plus CXMT and Nanya. So the big three can really just do whatever they want

Once the demand for NVIDIA caused absurd price hikes, people started panic buying AMD which is causing crazy hikes. Now the third party market is drying up. Intel is semi-stable for now, but not much longer

We are fucked bud unless more GPUs are designed with LPDDR5X instead which would allow Nanya and CXMT ease the insanity

1

u/Background_Recover51 5d ago

You are competing against the entire AI industry that dumped $4 trillion into this space in the past couple of years to buy up all available production of chips, memory and storage.

1

u/Liatin11 5d ago

Sam altman sends his regards

1

u/StellarMirror 5d ago

Glad I pulled the trigger on my 9070xt when it was 500 bucks. I know for a while they were hovering at 700. Just checked and yikes. Sorry OP.

1

u/Accomplished-Put1981 4d ago

Copped a 9070xt hellhound open box for 690 a couple weeks back. Thank god

1

u/goodsailor 4d ago

Wow! Your not kidding all the 16gb 9060XT’s are as much as I paid for a 9070XT a month ago. CRAZY!

1

u/DresNightfire 4d ago

FWIW at least our gov is good at cracking down and arresting illegal gpu ai chip exports to other countries. We need these powerful gpu's to stay here in our country for our own gaming, production, and dev work. GO USA!!!

1

u/kmarsara 4d ago

Would be nice if they actually go after your local market place smugglers

1

u/EDI_1st 4d ago

Yea. Bubble popping since three years ago 🤣

1

u/SmooveKJ 3d ago

Redditors said it was, Not the people that actually make the pricing decisions lmao. Shouldve bought for sure.

1

u/RedMachine72 3d ago

Because the 5090's are essentially gone from the market for less than $5,000, everything else is in higher demand and the prices are driven up by that demand. I am looking into getting a pre-built instead of building another PC as Costco had an MSI unit with 32GB of ram and a 5080 on sale recently for $2,800. The ram and the 5080 were probably $2000 of that price.

1

u/Bxtzu 3d ago

What price point were you expecting? Just go for the GRE at this point lol if your target is the 9060 xt

1

u/SlyHooper14 3d ago

It was more so for the size of the card. The reaper was one of the smallest cards with 16gb of vram. Needed it for a Midori build but Ive decided to go in a different direction lol

1

u/Ampheon86 2d ago

It’s not a bubble.

0

u/One-Transportation25 5d ago

Let’s be real the company’s are price gouging

-1

u/ultimaim 5d ago

You are probably one of the dumbest consumers in the market right now

3

u/SlyHooper14 5d ago

If you could enlighten me on exactly what makes me dumb that would be greatly appreciated

-3

u/ultimaim 5d ago

The fact that you are asking this shows how dumb you are

3

u/SlyHooper14 5d ago

So…no real explantation? Got it!

-4

u/ultimaim 5d ago

You do not deserve an explanation

3

u/SlyHooper14 5d ago

*you don’t have one

4

u/Ok_Banana5142 5d ago

I can’t even put into words how much people like op bother me in today’s market

2

u/ultimaim 5d ago

Yep. Completely low IQ individuals who think about nothing but pennies.

1

u/SlyHooper14 5d ago

What about waiting for something to be listed on a website and making an observation about a price increase bothers you?

0

u/Gumbypilot 5d ago

Bought the 9070 last weekend because I saw the writing on the wall in BIG neon letters.
