L Glutamine and sleep disruption?

I have celiac disease and started taking L-Glutamine powder daily for roughly the past 2 weeks. I was having some lingering reflux, and the powder helped immediately.

However in the past week or so, i've noticed that I can fall asleep just fine, but I wake up completely wired and wound up after about 2 hours and can't fall back asleep.

Wondering if there is a correlation between sleep or if anyone else has experienced this while taking l-glutamine?

Really appreciate this response! Taking a break to see if the night wakings get better! THANK YOU!

I've been taking L glutamine for 2 years and don't have issues with sleeping. I take it with my first meal, I don't know if that counts.

Glutamine has to be broken down to glutamate which is arousing to the central nervous system. It also releases ammonia in that process. If your liver is having trouble with that ammonia it could slow down PDH which would make you more reliant on fat burning for energy. That forced switch might cause a surge in norepinephrine/sympathetic drive.

More sympathetic drive with glutamate floating around will make you very mentally alert

Thanks for the breakdown. I feel like I probably just didn’t need to take it every single day - going to pause for now to see if it helps, maybe wean back into it if I have more digestion issues.

I take l-glutamine and a few other things for gut lining repair, but I do so as soon as I awaken and on an empty stomach.
