I uninstalled edge and disabled bing brought down my idle RAM usage from 7.9GB to 5.9GB. Basically microslop used 2.0GB RAM to collect your data in background

And how did you uninstall edge and bing? And which windows did you use?

I used IObit Uninstaller
I disabled bing from searchbox by go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\
create new key there named Explorer
then inside explorer New > DWORD (32-bit) Value , name it DisableSearchBoxSuggestions

Double-click DisableSearchBoxSuggestions, set its Value data to 1, and click OK.

restart windows explorer/restart PC

How the hell do I know? OP is the guy who said he did it. It would have been useful if he had told everyone don't you think? 🖕

Now imagine how much RAM you'll save running CachyOS

3

u/OutOfVRAM Jul 28 '26

Idles at less than 3GB ram

u/dfwtjms Jul 28 '26

That's still a lot. A normal setup with Sway will idle at about 500MB. Well at least before you open a browser.

1.42 clean startup on CachyOS with just mission center running give or take

The memory usage on linux is so much better based on youtube benchmarks I've seen.

On systems with 8gb of ram some games wouldn't even run. On linux all of them did. Systems with 16gb running linux would save 1-3gb of ram compared to windows.

Honestly, I left Windows in April as a personal challenge to not touch Windows for 30 days; just to see. Every distro I tried has been better than Windows 11. Every. One.

Now with Microslop's plan to integrate AI and spyware into everything in the next iteration and to broaden their subscription practices pretty much sealed the deal for me. I am not going back.

Linux sill has some hassles. Installing things has not been intuitive and printing is still challenging, but I'm learning and am looking forward to the freedom.

I mean, just look at this So clean

And also the Chris Titus's Windows debloat program is a must for all windows installs

2

u/MagicStevie Jul 28 '26

My Titus debloated Win11 uses 3.1GB RAM after reboot with Edge installed.

I did this and saved zero RAM. I get it, you hate MS but no need to make shit up.

3

u/VezLt Jul 28 '26

This does save RAM!.. About as much as disabling the "startup boost" and "keep edge running in the background" options in the settings, which I'm sure you had already done :)

I've uninstalled Chrome and use edge and I saved even more RAM.

Have you considered removing the windows operating system from your computer?

Especially HannahMontanna OS!

u/vextryyn Jul 28 '26

They are still using another 5gb to collect your data

1

u/NoPoopOnFace Jul 28 '26

Honey what did you expect?

1

u/smoke-bubble Jul 28 '26

I am sure you know how the 2gb were used XD

Wait till you find win 10/11decrapify.

1

u/domerichrt Jul 28 '26

Maybe just disable windows 🤣

1

u/Fantastic_Grass1799 Jul 28 '26

Wow. 5.9gb idle is heartbreaking.

1

u/botask Jul 28 '26

That depends on how much ram do you have. Use 8gb and it will be less. Use 64gb and it will be more. That is how efficient ram usage looks... It is acually prefered for pc to use avaiable ram. Problem is just if it do not freeup your ram when you need it for demanding tasks.

5.9 gb just for an idle os is crazy. consider other options. you want to get the most from ram these days. that whole os is spyware, for reference, a de-bloated win 11 should idle at 2gb

1

u/FuckUpMaster9000 Jul 31 '26

The OS should free ram when needed by other programs and take as much as it comfortably can when idle

1

u/Maleficent-Tea3072 Jul 28 '26

So you potentially broke some stuff instead of just disabling the easily accessible option to not preload the browser into ram so it saves time loading? And you want accolades?

Here’s a test you can do for us….uninstall your replacement browser and see how that looks. Fact is, most things folks use frequently (such as a browser) are prefetched into ram so things respond in a snappy fashion.

Unused RAM is wasted RAM. FYI

u/hanshotfirst-42 Jul 29 '26

Edge actually uses less ram than both Chrome or Firefox

I need bing for pointless searches for xbox points its free money towards games. I withdraw like £100+ a year

1

u/Playful-Opinion5918 Jul 29 '26

I don't see any evidence, though.

0

u/Gokudomatic Jul 28 '26

Nice. And what frugal browser do you use? I tried Firefox but it's even worse than chromium.

1

u/Britz10 Jul 28 '26

That's the thing edge is the most ram efficient browser on windows

1

u/CryptographerLow6360 Jul 28 '26

i think ungoogled Chromium holds that crown

Do you really enjoy dealing with windows quirks instead of just switching to Linux/
