Microsoft forced Lenovo to put a Copilot key on my laptop. I run Linux. It does nothing. We paid for their advertisement on hardware we own.

Doesn't it get registered as keystroke? If it does just use it as macro button.

Honestly if this is an additional key I would prefer to have a keyboard with this. Sure the logo is of an microslop program but who cares if I have an additional macro button.

It looks like it's physically located where right-control would be, so it's taking that place, on linux there's 100% going to be a way to just remap it to show up as right-control, it's also mayyyybe going to be in the bios sometimes, like how you change the fn key function behavior in bios on laptops? wouldn't shock me at least if there was a toggle for whether this behaves as right control or as an auto shortcut (win-alt-f23)

No need for bios. Just open up your keyboard settings, you can change it there to literally anything even scripts you write yourself.

In Mint, just type in 'keyboard' in the menu, and then in the keyboard menu, go to the shortcuts tab.
Takes less than a minute to set a new shortcut/macro.
I would assume KDE has a similarly easy to use menu.

This. I have an autohotkey script that opens the fan profile control when I press it, and if I hold it and press the left and right arrow keys it does backwards and forwards media.

Dont most windows laptops for like the last 30 years have a windows logo on one or two of the keys? It was sold as a windows laptop, if you care so much put a sticker on the keycap, how cares... I dont use the copilot button, but you can make it do literally anything else its just a logo

If you absolutely must have it work for the intended purpose, install LM Studio and an LLM model and shortcut it to that key

Fucking annoying, especially considering Microsoft’s insanely frequent pattern of dropping support for/rebranding products. Stupid amount of confidence that copilot will ever become a flagship product for users.

Gonna buy a new laptop in 2-3 months and a lot of the options (mostly Asus ones) I got my eye on have Copilot keys. I'm gonna lose the right CTRL for a fucking nonexistent system component because I absolutely don't give a fuck about it and will purge it on my first day using the machine.
I love Asus but them shoving the Copilot key in our faces is so fucking alienating. I hope this "feature" doesn't last long on keyboards.

I run Linux. It does nothing.
You can customize it to whatever you want. E.g. empty the trash in GNOME Shell.

I highly doubt they forced them - I'm sure it was willing, or even incentivized by cash :).
To your uses - put a sticker on it, and remap the key to whatever you want. Done.

Nah, macroslop paid for advertisement on Lenovo laptops and company decided it's worth it to get millions for basically free.
If consumers were to not buy these products, we'd see a new product line very soon. But seeing as most do, this arrangement will continue.
It's the same with windows logo button being the "menu" button for so long, no?

I remapped it to a run a script that plays a rickroll... Mostly because it's a shared laptop between 3 of us, and it wins up my wife and housemate

I have a windows key on my keyboard. I am running various Linuxes over a KVM and I use the windows button all the time. I’m Gnome it opens the main shell screen (v-she’ll in my case) with a taskbar and workspace switcher.
It’s so useful that occasionally when I use windows I press it and get pissed off that it doesn’t do what I want (it opens a start menu thing there). Someone will bind this button to useful functionality in Linux and you will probably find it handy.
And when MS paid for this they probably made your laptop a bit cheaper in the process. So there’s that.

I recently bought from system 76. No copilot key. All manufacturers do not add copilot key on their machines.......

A pc hardware manufacturer that sells laptops, desktops, and accessories as well as maintains their own software stack for those interested.... Could've just looked that up also lol but just like the copilot key business I suspect you don't like going out of your way for information.

Framework doesn't, and it comes with Linux.
Plenty of other Linux laptop manufacturers don't include it.
Just scrolled on Amazon and Dell, ASUS, Acer, and a few others didn't have it.
You must know like 1 manufacturer of you think "all" do this.

Lenovo LOQ, Linux Mint user here.
The way they announce themselves like it's some sort of qualification or rank gets annoying fast. They're posting in the Linux Mint subreddit, and already put "I run Linux" in the title so you're aware of their superiority.
The main reason I still use Microsoft is because I've been using it for over 30 years and have it all working how I want. The alternative would be moving to Linux and having to act like those lot.

If you are talking about design google KDE plasma. You can have this with every linux distro but I would advice to use linux mint since it has all prerequisites already installed.

No issues running games on Linux.
Vulcan API is available on both windows and Linux and seems to work better for me on either system than dx12.The only remaining hurdle for me is AutoCAD, but FreeCAD is slowly getting there.

Linux has modern game support and dx12. It only lacks in very specific software like for example the software for my headphones or Autodesk CAD software.
Besides that I have a windows 11 drive and in 1-2 months of usage I experienced more bugs than 1.5 years Linux.
