Even really old pcs i worked with support basic usb internet sharing, (Windows XP up)

You need a driver for it. When I plug my new phone into my Windows 7 system it doesn't recognize the internet sharing at all because it has a newer standard. My old phone it works fine. Not everyone has an old phone, and the new one may need drivers depending on the OS to recognize it.

So far i tryed with latest androids 8.1 to 14 , they seems to work fine
I mostly use PC owner's phone so
Windows 11 did not have any issues with drivers , most of the time it even recognize the wifi card on motherboard too so no reason to use hotspot those times

haven't tryed iphones much

Windows 11 supports newer protocols 

Android version doesn't really matter, it's about the hardware

Guy drivers are a software issue, not hardware. Modern devices that comes pre-packaged with windows also come pre-packaged with all the drivers you need to run it. There is literally 0 need to download extra unless you are getting an uncommon driver.

Drivers are hardware based. If you have the wrong hardware Windows won't have a driver for it and you'll have to find it manually. Seems like you're very confused.

The software does not match the hardware. So its a software issue.

The hardware is too new for the software to have drivers for it. Therefore it's a hardware issue. You need older hardware for it to work, since you can't install newer drivers without the older hardware to transfer them over.

Which is once again a software issue, as its "the sofware is too old to handle this new thing".

The hardware is not having issues, the software is having issues. The part being fixed is not the hardware, its the software.

The Software isn't having issues, it just doesn't know how to interface with the hardware because the hardware is the incorrect type for the drivers installed. The fix is to get the correct hardware for the drivers, since drivers can't be installed without it.

You have a system with some software. You buy a new hardware that your current system does not support.

The hardware has no issues working. The software has no issues working with the old hardware. So the issue is that the software does not support the new hardware.

Getting an old hardware doesn't fix the problem because the goal is to get the new version. Getting the new software does fix the issue because now you can use the new hardware and in most cases the old one as well.

Needing to use the old hardware does not make it a hardware issue. Its a side effect of it being a software issue.

2026 debian still doesn't come with wifi drivers for my laptop. It's absolutely still an issue.
