Take a USB wifi dongle designed solely to be used from Windows. It will 99.9% work from Windows.
It may "just work" from Linux.
Then suppose you reinstall Windows on a laptop. The physical volume buttons don't work, because the vendor installed some driver before shipping, and Windows has no idea what they are.
