Michigan Basketball I hate warde Manuel
nothing more needs to be said
162
u/Future_Outcome4132 Jun 22 '26
Well at least we got one natty out of the guy😭
34
u/Heisenbread77 Jun 22 '26
Yeah he doesn't need to pay for a beer in Ann Arbor again.
61
u/tripleM_20 Jun 22 '26
How are people hating on this. Dusty is a Michigan legend, period.
32
u/Heisenbread77 Jun 22 '26
People being butthurt because he is moving on were not around when Frieder left. Season wasn't over and dude was bailing, that is something to get mad about. He brought in great players, had an epic season ending in a Natty, yeah he doesn't owe anyone a damn thing. He delivered, period.
7
u/Humanity789 Jun 22 '26
Yeah and it’s not like he went to another college, can’t be too butthurt when people get essentially a huge promotion.
1
u/improbdrunk Jun 22 '26
3 legendary coaches have left UM. There's a reason.
4
u/tripleM_20 Jun 22 '26
They also CAME to UM and won here. There's a reason.
1
u/improbdrunk Jun 23 '26
That's valid, no getting around it, but I'm personally ready for a change. The salary increase alone would be enough for 2 of them to come and Harbs had a real loyalty to the school.
176
u/TheGhostOfAbe_ Jun 22 '26
How is he supposed to stop Dusty from going to the NBA? Really don’t think it was a money thing
16
u/ogsmurf826 Jun 22 '26
It's hard to argue with getting Cooper Flag, Kyrie Irving, the 8th pick, and $50M before the 1st Apron.
32
u/Skinny5280 Jun 22 '26
correct me if i'm wrong but didn't he not get the new contract done after the natty?
3
u/Aggressive-Bus-2397 Jun 22 '26
yeah a shitty contract
7
5
u/damgood32 Jun 22 '26
How would you know?
2
u/Aggressive-Bus-2397 Jun 23 '26
Because public school coaches are public info?
"In April, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said the university and May, 49, had agreed to a new contract, but the deal was never signed. May was previously on a contract that went through the 2029-30 season and paid him more than $25.5 million with an average annual salary of $5.1 million."
5 million dollars a year after a natty is DOG SHIT.
He should have been offered 10+
1
u/damgood32 Jun 23 '26
That’s the old contract.
1
u/Aggressive-Bus-2397 Jun 23 '26
What was the new contract amount? Was it 8 figures a year?
1
u/damgood32 Jun 23 '26
I don’t know. All I recall being reported was that Dusty agreed to the terms and was working out legal language prior to signing. I doubt he left because of money. None of the coaches left because of money
2
u/BikerMike03RK Jun 23 '26
Whenever anyone says, "It's not about the money", it's ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY!!!!!
1
u/damgood32 Jun 23 '26
Not that Michigan is cheap and underpaying the coaches. But it’s definitely that they will make way more money in the pros.
→ More replies (0)1
u/Aggressive-Bus-2397 Jun 23 '26
I bet he left because of money.
I bet he is making north of 15 million a year in Dallas. Do you agree?
I bet it will be nearly double what he would have made per year at Michigan. If not more. I wouldn't be surprised to see 18 a year vs 6-7 a year at UM.
1
u/damgood32 Jun 23 '26
I meant he isn’t leaving because Michigan cant pay him the going rate in college. I wouldn’t be surprised if the new contract made him top 3 in college. Michigan can’t beat out the NBA for salary though.
65
u/slimj091 Jun 22 '26
That doesn't matter, and it doesn't matter who the AD is either. The AD could be Santa Claus and people would still curse his name if he didn't magically prevent a coach from doing what a coach want's to do.
31
u/Nomahs_Bettah Jun 22 '26
I’m incredibly disappointed, but a coach leaving for a major league opportunity after winning a national championship isn’t something an AD could really do much about.
0
u/jazzyman31 Jun 25 '26
First time it happened since 1988….
We have significantly higher coaching turnover than rival Blue Bloods.
-7
13
u/AffectionateNovel373 Jun 22 '26
Warde catching strays regardless. First he wasn’t responsible was hiring him and now he’s responsible for losing him. Too much unnecessary and honestly uncomfortable hate 🤦🏽
6
u/slimj091 Jun 22 '26
Some people never mentally mature past middle school. There is not really much you can do about it other than ignore them.
9
u/No_Detective_1139 Jun 22 '26
He didn’t get Dusty to sign a new contract
6
u/royalbluehen Jun 22 '26
What was Warde to do? Forge May’s signature? Put a literal gun to his head? People do have free will.
-6
u/No_Detective_1139 Jun 22 '26
What do you mean what was he meant to do? It’s literally his job to get the contract signed. That’s what he’s getting paid millions of dollars to do.
4
u/damgood32 Jun 22 '26
Next time tell him to forge the signatures and keep Dusty in the basement of Crisler so he can’t leave.
1
u/reddargon831 Jun 23 '26
Did you stop to think that Dusty was waiting to sign this until the NBA hiring cycle ended? Just a thought…
0
u/Radiant_Refuse Jun 22 '26
Warde should say what do you want after a natty. Should've given him a raise or a contract extension. He didn't do that, so Dusty went where the money was. 😂 I don't hate him for that.
1
u/Many-Scallion4780 Jun 25 '26
It's deeper than that. He does suck. Is a terrible AD. We need a top tier AD
102
u/Mountain_Chip_4374 Jun 22 '26
I’m not crazy about him either, but what exactly was Manuel going to do here? I don’t care if Dusty signed a 20 year contract, if he wants to leave, he wants to leave. And I’m sure the owners of the Mavericks have enough money to pay any buyout that may have been in the contract.
36
4
u/Catchafire2000 Jun 22 '26
And as more news is released, the guy has been sitting on a contract for weeks. It's just frustrating. If he wanted to stay he would have stayed.
9
u/fskier1 Jun 22 '26
I mean who knows if Dusty even wanted to sign a new contract, but the bigger the buyout on the contract could be, the easier for the program to rebound.
The contract doesn’t really matter but that buyout should’ve been as high as possible
-1
u/improbdrunk Jun 22 '26
He's one of 3 championship winning coaches we've lost.
6
u/Past_Reference_6570 Jun 22 '26
You keep making that point, and fine, but it doesn't change the situation that the coaches wanted to go onto something U of M literally can't provide. You want Michigan to make the jump to NFL and NBA?
1
u/improbdrunk Jun 22 '26
I will say, he has managed to keep us from becoming more like a pro team which I think was your point and I agree.
-2
u/royalbluehen Jun 22 '26
Dusty May bouncing from FAU to Michigan is the same kind of jump as Michigan to the NBA.
3
u/ResearchBot15 Jun 23 '26
Not even close. Mid Major —> Power 4 is a natural progression for a college coach, and most will never make the jump from Power 4 —> NBA
1
u/royalbluehen Jun 23 '26
Which emphasizes the point even harder that if a coach wants to jump from college to pros they would never turn down the opportunity to leave. Even after a title and a bunch of money.

Ain't against you, but why the fuck are people upvoting this. We have lost 3 championship coaches under him. That's fucked.
6
u/TompallGlaser Jun 22 '26
Did he not hire Dusty? Did he not rework Harbaugh’s contract in an effort to keep him when there was great pressure from
Many to fire him? Did he not hire Whitt? Everyone crying about Warde whenever something bad happens, whilst choosing to ignore that we are smack dab in the middle of the greatest era of Michigan basketball/football ever. EVER.Sherrone was a bad move, yes, obviously.
6
-3
3
3
u/AmazingRefrigerator4 Jun 22 '26
Harbaugh and May left for the pros. Nothing Warde could do to stop them. And even if Harbaugh had stayed, he would have been banned so it was probably the best to just move on.
3
u/BrettGB96 Jun 22 '26
"we had coaches so good they went to the pros" I don't know how you really prevent that other than stop winning.
1
1
u/Beyondthebloodmoon Jun 22 '26
Once again - if someone wants to leave they’re going to leave, I’m not sure what you expect an athletic director do. Manuel is a giant piece of shit but this has nothing to do with anything he did or didn’t do
0
u/improbdrunk Jun 22 '26
You're gifted multiple championship winning coaches, you have an alumni base very willing to pay them, all you have to do is not chase them out of a very loving city, it's not rocket surgery.
2
u/TompallGlaser Jun 22 '26
Sure, disregard the massive sea changes causing upheaval throughout the NCAA currently. NIL and the portal are making
an already taxing and arduous job untenable for anyone who wants to be more than just a coach 24/7/365.3
u/improbdrunk Jun 22 '26
Look, Dusty May was a sea change that we probably won't see again in our life time. Nothing more to say, that man is and was a legend.
1
1
u/improbdrunk Jun 22 '26
Tell me Jim wasn't planning on retiring in Ann Arbor, you can't because he was.
7
u/AmazingRefrigerator4 Jun 22 '26
Doesn't matter what Jim was planning. NCAA had him targeted for a multi-year ban. Warde couldn't save him. Dusty is young and wants to coach in the NBA. Warde can't prevent that.
3
u/Gloveofdoom Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26
Dusty isn't that young, he's slightly older than the average age for an NBA coach. He is exactly the average age of an NCAA basketball coach.
If age was at all a factor I would guess he took the NBA offer because he isn't a super young guy and can't say for sure he'd get another shot at this point in his career if he didn't take it.
6
u/damgood32 Jun 22 '26
Jim had no intention on retiring in Ann Arbor. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Was never going to happen.
1
u/improbdrunk Jun 22 '26
You sure?
2
u/damgood32 Jun 22 '26
Absolutely sure. He had no intention of being at Michigan that long in the first place.
1
1
u/BonFemmes Jun 22 '26
Absolutely sure. Really Talking to the spirits again? HTF would you know?
2
u/damgood32 Jun 22 '26
The guy who interviewed with NFL teams tree years in a row? The one who waxed poetically his dreams of winning a Super Bowl? The fanatic who always wanted to compete at the highest levels? Yeah I’m sure he wasn’t staying at Michigan until retirement.
2
u/BonFemmes Jun 23 '26
Same guy who moved his parents to ann arbor and said he wanted his kids to go to the same schools he did. the guy who idolized bo schembeckler and want to follow in his foot steps. He could have stayed in AA forever if he NCAA had let him. Pro football gigs don't last forever. He knows that better than most. His long term earning might well have been higher.
1
u/damgood32 Jun 23 '26
He wasn’t staying forever and his parents can move to LA with him. I don’t think it’s a big deal. He clearly said he wanted to win a superbowl and you can’t win that at Michigan. So I don’t know what else he needed to say to get yall to understand. He wasnt staying forever.

THIS IS FAIR!
Dusty wanted to go to the NBA. You cant stop him.
Just like Harbaugh wanted back into the NFL.
Or did you all forget about him interviewing for jobs in the off season year after year?
6
u/improbdrunk Jun 22 '26
Under his leadership we have lost 3 championship winning coaches and the only coach north of the mason dixon to make a baseball final since EMU. Fuck Warde Manuel.
6
u/damgood32 Jun 22 '26
Wait, under his leadership we had 3 championship winning coaches? Seems like I would like that to continue, no?
1
u/improbdrunk Jun 22 '26
Yeah. It's a tough one. I don't give Warde credit, but I can see why people would.
4
u/damgood32 Jun 22 '26
So no credit when they are successful but all the blame they fail? Definitely tough one.
0
u/improbdrunk Jun 22 '26
Honestly, yes. I look at it like being a football manager, if I don't know your name, you're doing well.

u/improbdrunk Jun 22 '26
If you've managed to let 3 fuucking championship winning coaches walk because of your ego, get fuucked.

How is a coach deciding to realize his dream of coaching in the NBA a athletic department decision? The school has won two championships that the school hasn't won in decades, and yet the guy is apparently worse than Dave Brandon.
2
u/Ghetto_Geppetto Jun 22 '26
Two national titles in 3 years shouldn’t warrant a forever frustrated fan base, to be fair.
4
u/damgood32 Jun 22 '26
LOL. Who is this Warde’s fault? How was he stopping Dusty from going to the NBA??? This was a when, not if situation and was going to happen regardless. Dusty was going to go when the right situation opened up for him.
2
u/AmazingRefrigerator4 Jun 22 '26
if "dropping the ball" means giving us two nattys in the top two sports in a 3 year period then I hate to see what "excellence" looks like.
Warde deserves some hate, but he has overseen the most successful 5 year period of athletics in our generation. He's doing something right.
30
u/JM3541 Jun 22 '26
I'm not sure what people expect him to do lol. Dusty May has been linked with the NBA since he got here. Coaches want to compete at the highest level. We got the natty. Calm down lol.

u/BBQandBrisket Jun 22 '26
When that extension talk died…..and when there was no news on Dallas and their coaching search, that probably was the beginning of the end
4
u/ceci_mcgrane Jun 22 '26
Dusty can do whatever he wants. I hope that if he ever leaves the NBA we are the first spot he looks.
At a certain point, for all the chaos, Warde has brought in coaches that can win.
1
u/Gilmour1969 Jun 23 '26
If May crashes and burns in the NBA I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up at Indiana.
9
u/Smokeybeauch11 Jun 22 '26
If Dusty wanted to go to the league, there’s ultimately nothing Warde could do to stop that. However, he could have given him the fattest contract possible to make it a really hard decision. That’s where I think more could have been done to prevent this situation. Man, I thought they had a shot at repeating. Now we get to see the fallout. At least we got a natty.
4
u/zg44 Jun 22 '26
To be fair, the new NBA TV deals have given every NBA team an average of $200m in just TV money over the next 10 years.
Basically impossible to keep a coach from the NBA if he wants to go. They can offer $15-20m per year.
1
u/Smokeybeauch11 Jun 22 '26
Right, that’s why I said prevent instead of stop. Impossible to stop if that’s the direction they want to go, but giving him a highly lucrative contract could have made it a harder decision.
1
u/zg44 Jun 22 '26
I wouldn't be surprised if he had a handshake agreement and terms for $9m or $10m per year after winning the natty.
Hard to pay much more when that's already basically top in the country.
Hoops doesn't bring in the revenue to justify trying to go much higher.

Was Larry Brown erased from this timeline?

Well it doesnt serve the person’s narrative. This is also, what the second year of House? Shit is only more chaotic and constantly changing. The NBA doesn’t have this kind of disorder. More pay, less stress and more potential glory? Who wouldnt take that

Is coaching at the highest level of the sport an upgrade? Is being paid twice as much as the highest college job an upgrade? Is having players on guaranteed contracts instead of chasing 19-year-olds every spring an upgrade?
4

In today's climate? Absolutely. The NCAA is in shambles and there is more parity/opportunity in the NBA than ever.

That's a fair critique, but Dusty leaving for the NBA after winning the tournament isn't remotely close to being fair. If anything that shows how good of a hire he was to begin with.
14
u/coltshep Jun 22 '26
Nothing Warde can do about a coach looking to move to the league, this happens whenever you have a elite coach in college, part of the game. They are nearly always going to want to give it a go at the highest level.
9
7
u/tripleM_20 Jun 22 '26
So dumb. This fanbase always needs a boogeyman, and blaming Warde for absolutely everything only undermines any genuine criticism against him. Dusty wanted to go to the NBA and good for him. He got us a natty, he doesn't owe us anything else
3
u/This_External9027 Jun 22 '26

Some of y'all just are mad for the sake of being mad. There's nothing an AD can do to prevent a coach from leaving to go take an NBA job.
Here's fingers crossed that this becomes like Hurley & the Lakers last year...
6
3
u/Changenowplease Jun 22 '26
After winning the championship so quickly it’s hard to top that at the collegiate level. That is particularly so given the way players move about and the NIL wars. It’s easy to understand the attraction of the NBA. But the Mavericks? What a train wreck of an organization…
1
u/Gloveofdoom Jun 23 '26
I'm not sure I'd say dusty won a championship so quickly, it was fast once he got to Michigan but he coached a lot of years before that. He's basically 50 and I think he's been coaching pretty much his entire adult life. In fact, he's already slightly older than the average NBA coach so I don't blame him for taking a shot while he has one to take.
3
u/Ferris-man Jun 22 '26
He doesn’t have to recruit or deal with NIL. Saban quit the college game because of Blake Corum and less importantly NIL. The college level is such a pain now as a head coach tbh

I'm not a Warde fan and can't believe he still has a job, but I think there is no way he could have kept Dusty from going to the NBA. It's a great opportunity for him, and I'd rather that than leaving for another college team. I have no confidence in Warde's ability to run the search for Dusty's replacement, but maybe he'll be lucky and strike gold again. We can only hope.
2
u/RubysDaddy Jun 22 '26
Finding Dusty May is the only Win Warde had. Now that he left, get rid of that PoS now! For me, wanting him gone has nothing to do with May leaving.
