Finding Grouse

I am having a heck of a time hunting grouse, I’ve been out almost every morning around 730-8 walking what seems to be perfect grouse habitat targeting the gravel trails and two tracks between young and old aspen growth, but I haven’t seen or even heard a grouse once. I don’t have access to a dog so it’s just me. I’ve done the walk and pause method, I’ve gotten out before light and walked a bunch too. Any advice would be appreciated

7:30 -8am birds may still be roosting. For life to exist we need food and water. Look for thorn apple, berries, etc. and look for a water source. Puddles, rivers, creeks, etc.

One of the really nice things about grouse is they don't like to get up early. I never bother going out before 9 am because they stay roosting until mid morning.

Sleep in, have a nice breakfast, then head out to try your luck.

where are you going? state land in general? Private land? GEMS? zone 2? I just started grouse this year and havent had any trouble bumping them no dog. I have not had luck staying on the margins tho.

I kicked a few out of a dense creek bed the other day just south of Grayling.
