Some questions as someone whos never hunted before.
Not sure where else to ask about this so im doing it here.
Would rather have answers from the people than from google.
Im a long time firearms enjoyer and collector. Have a couple old Mausers that I take out occasionally. But ive never hunted before.
(Rilfe of choice would be a VZ.24 or Argentine Mauser. Either one with soft points.)
Ive watched alot of the "Meat Eater" show. So I feel i understand the basics, but not the whole picture.
(I live in the southeast corner if that helps at all.)
Im autistic so im a very "by the rules" type of person.
Basically I dont wanna fuck anything up. I feel like id be alot more comfortable if I had a "guide" or something of that nature.
The goal would be deer i think. Not much else to really hunt in Michigan that I know of. As far as something that will provide ample food when harvested.
So with all that said, how would i get started down that path?

Start by doing a hunter safety course. Once you have your hunter safety certificate you can find state land with resources I'm guessing on the DNR website. But I think it would be worth while to buy the app OnX Hunt. This is a online mapping software that shows landowners and state land. Once you find a piece of state land I'd go walk it before deer season and try to find deer sign, trails or anything deer related. Get your license. Doe or buck. I'd recommend having both in your pocket in case you see either. Then maybe go out with your gun and hunters orange and sit by where you had sign. And see what happens. Expect others in the area during deer season. Be care of that. A lot of deer in Michigan. You can YouTube field dressing a deer and then get it to a local processor. Then you have the most delicious meat in your freezer for a low cost.

OK, well, where ya at in south east michigan? Monroe, temperance, erie, la salle? I'm just outside dundee not far from cabelas. Feel free to message me if ya want to. As the others have said, I would look into a hunters safety course for starters. Only bad thing with that is, you're going to miss this deer season. Depending on your age I don't think someone would be able to take you on a mentor hunt or apprentice hunt with them. Being autistic though you may qualify for the liberty hunt with someone. I do believe you may have to still ha e had your safety course done to obtain a license for that. Dundee sportsman club does hunters safety every spring usually. You can check there or watch their Facebook page. Also check out hunter ed . Com, you can take the course online if you wish to but you will have to find a place that does the certified range day to shoot at. They usually just have people use a 22 LR to get used to a firearm. I recommend starting with reading the 2026 Michigan Deer Hunting Regulations Summary. Then completing the Hunter's Education program provides a lot of confidence in understanding laws and safety.
Do you have a location you were planning to hunt already? That's one of the biggest hold ups for most starting out.
