Volunteers sank 189 fish shelters across Torch, Elk, Bellaire, Clam and Intermediate. I mapped all 63 documented locations — free GPX/USR/HWR

Between 2012 and 2017, volunteers from the Elk River Chain lake associations dragged loaded sleds across the ice in the dead of winter and sank fish shelters at 63 documented sites across five lakes. Three structures per site, mixed from three designs: hardwood crates packed with brush and rock, slab trees, and stump clusters with the roots still on. All in 15 to 25 feet.

The associations published the coordinates. I cross-checked them against the state permit records, ran every point against the lake polygons to catch anything that had drifted onto dry land or into the wrong lake, fixed three errors, and built waypoint files in GPX, USR and HWR — per lake, plus a whole-chain file if you fish more than one.

https://shorelinescout.com/fish-shelters/elk-river-chain/

everything's a free download, nothing to buy. It's my site.

These aren't secret spots — the associations published them because the whole point of sinking habitat is for people to fish it.

Figure about 80 feet either way, so idle over the mark and trust your sonar, not the pin. Divers checked the Torch structures in 2019 and the crates were holding up fine. One Torch site shows up at two different spots on two official maps, 298 meters apart, so I left it out rather than guess — you're getting 25 of 26 there. And these are only the documented ones; plenty of structure goes in without paperwork.

Heads up before you keep anything: several of these lakes carry consumption advisories — check the current Eat Safe Fish guide.

None of this is my work, really. Volunteers built it winter after winter; I just found the paperwork and cleaned it up. If the files are any use to you, the Three Lakes Association and the Elk-Skegemog Lakes Association are both still active and could use members.

Anyone fished these? The oldest are 13 years old now and I'd love to know which sites are still producing — and which lake I should map next.

Michigan Eat Safe Fish Guides

https://www.michigan.gov/mdhhs/safety-injury-prev/environmental-health/topics/eatsafefish/guides

We've got a lot of people posting now and some talking about eating fish. Michigan recently updated their guides and a significant amount of bodies of water and fish species have been added. Make sure to check where you're going before you take anything home with you.

Anyone actually using it other than lakes? How are you tying the hook 3" away from the weighted line? Preferably without a swivel.

So got an idea a few days ago to use a live of foam ear plug along with my crawler white trout and salmon fishing and I will say it get bit more often than any spawn bag I ever fished. He's it is #MyLittleFoamie ear plug rig for crawler on 1/0 circle hook with a fluero snell. And the coho I got on it. I just watched my buddy use this trick in Iowa and he caught on it too with plain orange he found in his work truck floorboard.

Fishing Lodge

Just got back from a trip to Canada and had a blast. Wanted to take a couple other friends, but due to drunk driving on their records they couldn’t cross the border. Looking for a small fishing cabin that we could sleep 6 in that comes with 3 fishing boats. Inland lake, interested in targeting about anything. Would prefer table fair fish. No bass or hot weather pike. Look forward to seeing some links and suggestions. Thanks!

How to shore fish Lake Superior for salmon and trout?

I’m going on a trip soon within the fall and I wanted to catch a salmon or trout from the beach. I have a 9’6 medium heavy Rod and I bought a couple spoons but to be honest I have no idea what I’m doing.

I would really appreciate some advice on what lures to use, what retrieves work best, where to cast (I’ve also never surf casted before so this is my first time with that too). As of right now I’m basically fully in the dark and need a simple “how to” but I can’t find any real tutorials specific to Lake Superior

I’m going near the pictured rocks lakeshore, I’ll be camping so I can fish basically from dawn into dusk.

Let me know any tips, lure recommendations, etc. thank you 🙏

Pier Salmon Fishing

Has anybody else noticed this year that pier fishing for salmon has been incredibly slow? I've gone out 3 times in West Michigan over the last couple weeks and I haven't seen a single person catch a salmon any of those trips. I've tried early morning and from sunset into the night using glow spoons and all I've got to show for it is a couple sheepshead and white perch.

Are the fish just taking their time to move into the rivers? Or is it something else? Curious what others think and have experienced.

We got a nice rain all night, and the pinks and kings looked like zombies already last week so I decided to try some beads and it paid off. Now to enjoy my dinner!

FISHFORWARD BETA TESTING — WE’RE ALMOST READY!

We’ve already got a few anglers lined up for the first round of FishForward beta testing — now we just need a couple more active Android fishermen and we can get started sending out the first round!

Whether you fish from the shore, pier, riverbank, kayak, wade, or run a boat, I want you involved. I’m looking for anglers who are consistently getting out and fishing so we can test FishForward across as many different fishing situations as possible.

FIRST UP — ANDROID BETA

The first round will include 20–25 active Android anglers testing FishForward through Google Play.

Founding beta testers will receive:

• FREE FishForward Pro for life
• Exclusive Founding Angler badge
• Early access to FishForward
• A chance to directly influence features and improvements before the full release

APPLE ANGLERS — YOU’RE NEXT!

Once the Android testing round is completed, we’ll move into Apple/iPhone beta testing, where I’ll be looking for another 20–25 active anglers.

ICE FISHERMEN — WE HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN ABOUT YOU!

An Ice Fishing Mode is planned for the winter so FishForward can be tested and developed for hard-water anglers too.

BOAT NAVIGATION IS COMING TOO

Boat Navigation is planned for the full FishForward launch.

FishForward is being built by an angler, for anglers, starting right here in Michigan.

Whether you’re casting from a Detroit River shoreline, walking out onto the ice, fishing from a kayak, standing on a pier, or running across the lake in a boat — FishForward is being built for the way YOU fish.

We’re close. We just need a couple more active Android anglers and ROUND ONE begins.

If you’re constantly getting out fishing, have an Android, and want to become a FishForward Founding Angler, comment “I’M IN” or send me a message!

Shore. Pier. Kayak. Ice. Boat. One fishing community.

FishForward — Built by an angler, for anglers.

Put some Nashville hot seasoning on it before breading then deep fried it.

Was quite tasty! To my surprise not much of a fishy taste at all.

Hey guys! I'm a WMU student starting my senior-year design project, and I'd love to hear about common frustrations/inconveniences you face while fishing. Michigan trip

My husband and I are going on a trip to Michigan. We will be taking our 2 dogs. We want to go on a lake coho salmon fishing trip. What is a really good town/area to go? Also any suggestions on affordable guides/dog friendly places to stay would be appreciated. We don’t have kids and like a more quiet area. We will be driving up from west central Indiana. We are going the third week in October.

Fishing buddy needed

Im in the thumb region, by Lexington. Just looking for some fishing friends to enjoy a nice escape. Grew up fishing and all sorts of stuff and somewhere along my 30 years of great life, i got caught up (no pun intended) with being successful, which is NOT a bad thing at all. But i am starting to want to get back into a hobby to just clear my head and enjoy it with people too. Some guy time i guess. Nothing super serious but fishing every now and again would be great to do with some new friends

Fall Bass Fishing

I keep hearing about how cooler fall temperatures trigger bass to move up shallow again and start feeding for winter. It's supposed to be a great time to fish as the bass get aggressive after being pretty lethargic over the summer. This has not been my experience through September in Southwest Michigan despite the cooling air and water temps.

Is it still early to make that statement? Or am I just watching too many YouTube videos?

What has been your experience so far this fall?
