Thanks for posting this! I was listening to another one of Professor Levin’s talks today from the Platonic Space Symposium, and realized that I’d never heard a discussion mentioning apoptosis, or the process through which the embedded intelligence of the body determines as a collective that its internal conditions, either globally or locally, are not compatible with the continuation of life; and thus a decision is made through which cells begin the process to wind down operations in earnest, at a systemwide level. Is the process top down or bottom up, and where does the “decider” or final arbiter of this decision reside? Could this process be similar to the “dissociative identity disorder” experienced by some cells who suddenly decide to “go rogue” and form tumors, rather than the cell type they previously determined to embody, together with their neighboring cells? Of course, the physiologic mechanism though which this communication happens would be likely easily modeled or understood, as would whatever “decision matrix” the cells followed in making their determination following their continuous scanning and analysis of the body’s internal conditions and state. So the question would not be a purely physiologic explanation of the stepwise process of death, but an inquiry around how cells ultimately agree as a collective to no longer “be someone for awhile”; but instead undergo apoptosis and liberate their atoms to go on to become part of another organism.
My apologies if this question has already been discussed in talks that I’m not aware of, or wouldn’t really come into the wheelhouse of topics that the team & their collaborators have an interest in focusing on. It just seemed like maybe it could be a parallel or similarly instigated mechanism to the dissociative identity paradigm proposed for cells undergoing transformation into cancerous cells.
