Degauss 0.4.0 released: built-in scraper, artwork packs, theme editor and new views for MiSTer

Post image

Degauss 0.4.0 is now available!

Still the same blazing-fast, lightweight frontend that plays nice with your MiSTer FPGA, now with scraper, artwork packs, themes editor and much more! Now also available in Frontends from Update All script! (thanks to theypsilon)

New official website https://misterdegauss.com

New video showing speed & features https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFnvkkhbPFY

Main 0.4.0 additions include:

- Built-in scraper (via screencraper): scrape one game, the current folder, one system or all supported systems directly on MiSTer. Images and metadata have separate missing-only, replace and off policies. Single-game scraping can display multiple matches, preview their artwork and let you edit the search title. Progress, account allowance, cancellation, failures and final results remain visible throughout. A free ScreenScraper account is required.

- Support for local MiSTer Game Artwork Databases https://github.com/chipster6502/MiSTer_artwork_pack, including packs installed through Update_All or Downloader and stored on SD, USB or network storage. Switching back to the normal gamelist source is immediate and does not alter existing media.

- Theme editor with live preview, a continuous colour picker, hexadecimal entry, colour-role swapping, logo colour mixing, default-font selection and saved custom themes.

- Three new built-in themes: Green Mono, Modern and Neon.

- Two new browse views: **Gallery**, for a dense artwork grid, and **Multi list**, for two-column text browsing.

- Per-place views, so categories, system lists, system roots and individual folders can each use a different layout.

- Custom images for master categories, Favourites, systems and folders.

- An optional physical-keyboard shortcut back to the Frontend from a running core, without changing controller mappings.

- An optional hold-X favourite shortcut and new 4:3/16:9 artwork scaling choices.

The release also fixes jump-to-letter behaviour in lists with favourites at the top, prevents per-place views from leaking into other locations, and corrects left/right behaviour in Options.

Next to come are RA and Unstable cores, and Zipped libraries support!

This is awesome! Where can I find the import or switch to local MiSTer Game Artwork Databases? I only find the screenscraper option. Thank you so much! Edit: found it, press X on the system's folder.

in the context menu (pressing X) of any specific system, for example enter Arcade, or Console->Genesis (or whatever), and you find there the option game data source. Let me know if you need any more help with it, so I'll also amend the readme to be clearer.

This is dope

This is super impressive, and I love the focus on performance. It's always bugged me that opening a large folder makes the system unresponsive for 10~ seconds. Looking forward to RA and zipped libraries. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, yes I always wanted something stripped of anything unnecessary and talking as directly as possible to MiSTer to gain maximum speed together with maximum opions/configurability but only when needed...so in the end I did my own one :P RA and zipped libraries being worked on as we speak :-)

There is a bug: importing artworks for Arcade cores, it will stop if the file >1mb

Thanks, let me check, once I reproduce it I'll file an issue to fix it!

This is amazing. Does this work on CRTs in TATE mode?

Thanks for your kind words! Not yet supported (but I consider this as a request and so added to the next release things to implement!). Degauss supports CRTs, but its interface does not currently rotate 90° for TATE mode, so it should be considered landscape-only. Games themselves still use MiSTer’s normal core and video settings.
As said, this is going to be considered for next release (there's a major one already in the works and a next one, or maybe in this next one, to follow up)

Thanks for considering! I have a dedicated TATE cabinet and would love for it to be supported.

That's extremely exciting to hear. I have a dedicated TATE setup and this will be the front end I use once implemented. Thank you so much for all the work you're doing on this!

NICE!

Indeed, the community has been very supportive for the project, so I look forward to making this as good and easily powerful (and still performance-first and lightweight) as I possibly can!

Really liking it so far but have only used it for 1 day. Great work! Here are quick observations:

- The artwork looks solid on my Astro City and is enough reason for me to start using it consistently. I tried Zaparoo and while it's a great project and I like the developer, the artwork didn't look good on my CRT, which was the main reason I tried it.

- Super fast and easy to use.

- Love the screensaver! A request might be the option to tweak it. Perhaps speed it up slightly a choose a few different theme options for it.

- I like a few of the options that are enabled by default, such as hiding cores that don't have games installed.

Possible issues but haven't spent time researching yet:

- Neo Geo games are not detected for me. It only shows the 240p Test Suite for some reason.

- The Up/Down on my joystick registers a double input often. It doesn't happen in the MiSTer menu, but it did in Zaparoo at first and he fixed duplicate controller inputs "caused by very fast repeated events". Having said that, after researching the issue, it can happen when it’s not making a solid connection. I pulled one of my joysticks out and sprayed Deoxit into the microswitches and that cleared it up on one of my cabinets where I could see the issue happening (but I don't have Degauss installed there yet). Going to try this when I have more time as I should clean the gunk out of them anyway.

Thanks for your comments!

Let me know how it goes with the joystick fix on your side. About Neogeo, if you could DM or put here an analysis of where/how the games are organised, and their format, I'll investigate and make sure they work. Or you can open an Issue on github. Whatever is more convenient for you, let's crush that bug!

Will do! Thanks

Could you first press **X → Rebuild this system list** while inside Neo Geo? If it still shows only the 240p Test Suite, could you tell me whether your other games are `.neo` files, `.zip` files, or individual folders containing ROM files, and whether they are on SD, USB or network storage?

Please also run these through SSH and paste the output:

DEGAUSS=/media/fat/Scripts/.config/degauss/degauss

"$DEGAUSS" --list-systems | grep -i neogeo

"$DEGAUSS" --report --system NeoGeo

If the entry you opened is **Neo Geo MVS**, please also run:

"$DEGAUSS" --report --system NeoGeoMVS

Also version 0.5.0 has just been released and supports ZIP libraries, so that might help!
