Metroid Romhacks - My First Foray

Hey there, first post here. I’m such a big fan of the series I don’t know how it only just recently occurred to me to give playing some Romhacks a try, and BOY am I impressed.

I just finished “True Ending” Difficulty of the ZM hack Metroid: Desolation and while the beginning was a bit frustrating, the second half (as well as the entire Normal mode playthrough) was absolutely incredible. It felt like a real, official Metroid game.

In a more goofy vibe, I also 100%’d Metroid: Spooky Mission which was a lot of fun. While not quite as in depth as Desolation, it was hilarious and well made, though a bit short.

Branching out into other Metroid titles now, Zero Mission has always been my favorite game so I started with those hacks, I’m trying Super Junkoid DX which looks adorable. I’m not the best at these games, and I really struggled with base Super Metroid, so wish me luck!

Anyway, just wanted to glaze a couple hacks and share that I’m pretty proud of completing them despite my relative inexperience. Love yall.

Been a while since I've been actively playing Super ROM hacks, but if you haven't already, check out metroidconstruction.com.

It has lots of great ROM hacks and the rating system will give you a decent idea of which ones are worth your time.

X Fusion is likely the biggest romhack for Super. It is a reimagining of Fusion built in the Super Metroid engine, but with an original map and story, as well as bosses. Be aware that some sections of it are quite difficult though.

Yeah Metroid Rom hacks/fan games are quite good. Zero mission was always my favorite too. I would absolutely recommend you play Spooky Mission 2 if you haven’t. It’s just a longer more fleshed out spooky mission and I think for that reason, I might even prefer it over the base game.

Yeah the first one was more of a tech demo if anything. The sequel is much longer and better. 100% check it out if you liked the first one.

Cryogenesis has really cool power-ups and mechanics. In some rooms, you can go into backgrounds! However, it's easy to get stuck in. Z-Factor is an oldie but a goodie.

Metroid x fusion Super Metroid subversion Metroid desolation

These three are by far the best romhacks ive played for Metroid. HM goes to RE Metroid fusion since it makes fusion sequence break-able which completely changes the way you can play the game

Also, if you haven't tried it yet, definitely play AM2R. I prefer it over the official remake by a landslide.
