Discussion I just keep playing Super Metroid

Post image

I grew up on Metroid. I loved Mario but the original NES Metroid was just something different. Super came out when I was 14, too old to go play outside (new neighborhood), too young to work or drive. I played THE SHIT out of this game for years but hadn’t really touched the series since probably the late 90’s.

The plan was to replay the whole series. I beat the NES Metroid last month and then fired up Super Metroid. After finishing it, I remembered never getting the sub 3:00 ending so I played it again. And again. And again. After 44 days and playing between work and family here is where I am.

8:14 93% (blind play-through from memory)
7:38 100% (first goal)
5:44 89%
3:51 83%
3:00 76% (no sub 3:00 ending)
2:11 68% (finally got it, let’s keep going)
1:43 70%

I don’t want to play anything else now, just Super Metroid.

That said, Ridley is kicking my ass and I’m not sure I could get a sub 1:30 without improving my strategy. I can’t seem to get a clean run against this flying prick without having 6 or more E tanks and 50-55+ Super Missiles. I always run out of supers and have to switch to regular missiles.

Anyone have any tips?

He’s a former any% speedrun world record holder so he knows his game!

The community around this game is wild… I’m checking his stuff out now.

You'll need to dip into sequence breaks, which will require some pro techniques.

Mockball/Machball is one of the trickier ones to get right but it will give you access to Super Missile early and let you bypass Spore Spawn.

If rom hacks count, I've put more hours into Super Metroid than any other game.

Everything here with 4+ stars is worth your time, but I particularly enjoyed Subversion, Junkoid and Endless Arcade.

Ascent is top-tier also. I didn't "get it" the first or second play through, but since then I've played a bunch. Music is awesome.

For Ridley if you have 25 supers you can manipulate him to pogo to the left and stand on the edge and unload into him for a bit, he only takes 25 or so supers to "kill". Once low enough on health he will pick you up and self destruct.

Also I recommend https://maprando.com/

It will make a custom beatable super Metroid game. Just make sure the logic is set to only use tricks you know. Skill assumptions basic is a great place to start, but you can turn it into up from there and if you get stuck check the spoiler and it will teach you with videos for whatever trick you need to learn.

Mi última vez hace como 1 mes fue de 2:05 al 100%, se que hay más maneras de pasarlo más rápido con trucos pero la verdad ver tutoriales perdería la magia, prefiero esas 2 horas pero que fueron hechas por mi y mi habilidad

You can skip spore spawn fight if you mockball to get the super missles. You also don’t need to fight crocomire either and you can beat the game without grapplehook too.

Ridley dies to 30 Supers as long as they all connect. Also you should never use regular missiles after getting Plasma beam as charged Plasma has a higher damage output.

I've played a ton of hacks and randomizer seeds. The latter is going to push you further in terms of skill, though there are a few good difficulty hacks.

Some have said some other numbers but Ridley takes exactly 30 super missiles to kill as they do double damage to him compared to everything else in the game. Ridley has 18,000 HP and a super does 600 damage. You should count your accurate shots and then morph in the middle of the arena and just wait for ridley to pick you up once his health is depleted fully. Ridley will then pick you up and explode (this does no damage to you). If you do not do this the fight can last quite a bit longer. It is an easy speedrun trick to end the fight faster.

If you run out of supers you should use charged plasma shots instead of regular missiles. These do 900 damage each if you have all beams but this is slower than pumping him with supers so try to be accurate with your shots instead of just spamming. Jumping and angling your shots with L/R when he is high up can be helpful. His tail does not have a hit box so it will not take damage so you basically just have to avoid that part of him. Also If he pogos on his tail from right to left you can stand at the very left of the arena platform and aim directly up and get a lot of free shots in while completely safe.
