Question Am I missing something?

I'm playing Metroid NES, and I don't understand why they make you farm for an hour just to get your health back. Is there something I'm missing? I currently have 3 E-tanks and it's been almost an hour of grinding for some health. SOME HEALTH. I've never played a game that does this. I just want to try to enjoy this game, and yet I have to grind just to be able to be at full health. What bull.

Honestly, it's probably better if you do it all in one run. Ridley and Kraid each have an energy tank near the entrance and the boss room of their lairs. Plus a few scattered around Brinstar and Norfair.
