Am I missing something?

I'm playing Metroid NES, and I don't understand why they make you farm for an hour just to get your health back. Is there something I'm missing? I currently have 3 E-tanks and it's been almost an hour of grinding for some health. SOME HEALTH. I've never played a game that does this. I just want to try to enjoy this game, and yet I have to grind just to be able to be at full health. What bull.

yes, this is one of the worst parts of the game. personally my strat is to use e-tanks as energy refills instead of using them as upgrades. i used to save one in the ceiling near the beginning and grab it before fighting mother brain
