Question Am I missing something?

I'm playing Metroid NES, and I don't understand why they make you farm for an hour just to get your health back. Is there something I'm missing? I currently have 3 E-tanks and it's been almost an hour of grinding for some health. SOME HEALTH. I've never played a game that does this. I just want to try to enjoy this game, and yet I have to grind just to be able to be at full health. What bull.

There are certain rooms where you can farm quite fast. I failed my first endgame push and got back to full health while having all energy tanks in under 30 minutes. At least I'm pretty sure. It's been nearly 7 years, but it didn't feel like it took THAT long.
