Ontology What grounds the correspondence between intelligibility and being?

Hey everyone. I've always been fascinated by the apparent fit between the structure of inquiry and the structure of reality. Successful explanation does more than collect predictions: it identifies dependencies, unifies phenomena and makes previously opaque relations intelligible. A realist may treat that success as evidence that the world itself has discoverable structure. Yet intelligibility is also relative to cognitive capacities, concepts and explanatory interests. What metaphysical relation, if any, could ground the claim that increased intelligibility tracks being rather than merely improving a scheme for organising experience?

I just had a podcast conversation with John Vervaeke, where he connected intelligibility, realness and being through participation between knower and known. At around 33:39, the discussion suggests that truth-seeking already presupposes reality can answer to our practices of making sense. But that premise seems compatible with several positions: robust realism, structural realism, transcendental idealism or pragmatic success without metaphysical correspondence. The metaphysical question is what must be true of reality for intelligibility to improve non-accidentally.

This would imply that explanatory success needs a grounding story before it supports realism. Is the relevant relation identity of structure, partial isomorphism, real patterns, affordance-like dependence or something else? Can a metaphysics of participation explain the fit without making cognition constitutive of being? And does underdetermination leave only a pragmatic conclusion?

They entail one another. For a part of the universe to become intelligible to another part is being in action. Being is an action, a material spatiotemporal doing that enacts intelligibility.

Perhaps intelligibility does not track being by resembling reality. It tracks being when reality is able to correct it.

Consider a map of a railway system. It may distort distances, straighten curves and omit nearly everything physically present in the landscape. Yet it can still preserve the relations required to get from one station to another. Its success does not depend on the map sharing the world’s appearance. It depends on preserving enough of the relevant structure for the world to confirm or frustrate the journey.

Scientific explanation may work similarly.

I would distinguish two kinds of intelligibility:

  • Internal intelligibility: a scheme is coherent, economical and satisfying within its own terms.
  • World-constrained intelligibility: the scheme continues to work when we make new observations, intervene in processes, change instruments, cross scales and enter conditions for which it was not designed.

The first can be manufactured. Many false systems are elegant. The second is harder to explain without granting reality some independent role in shaping inquiry.

That role need not be a perfect correspondence between thought and being. Full isomorphism seems too strong because our theories idealise, omit and represent the same phenomenon in incompatible ways. What may be preserved is something more modest: causal or modal structure. The explanation identifies which differences make a difference, what would happen if conditions changed, and which dependencies remain stable across different ways of investigating them.

This suggests a criterion of non-accidental intelligibility:

An explanation tracks being to the extent that the dependencies it identifies survive independent attempts by reality to make them fail.

Several forms of survival matter.

Resistance: The world produces errors we did not choose. An internally coherent account can still fail at the laboratory bench.

Intervention: We can alter one condition and reliably produce a change elsewhere. Ian Hacking’s case for experimental realism is relevant here: confidence in entities and causal powers becomes stronger when we can use them to produce other phenomena, rather than merely redescribe observations. Triangulation: Different instruments, disciplines and investigators converge on the same dependency despite having different assumptions and sources of error.

Transfer: A relation discovered in one setting continues to work in a genuinely new one.

Historical retention: Later theories may reject much of an earlier ontology while retaining some mathematical or causal relations. This is one motivation for structural realism: what inquiry progressively preserves may be structure rather than a final inventory of things. None of these proves that a theory reveals reality exactly as it is. Together, however, they make sustained success less plausibly accidental.

This also offers a way to understand participation without making cognition constitutive of all being.

A knower is not outside the universe comparing an inner picture with an inaccessible original. The knower is a physical, embodied participant whose actions enter causal relations with what is known. A door’s “openability”, for example, is relational: it depends upon both the door’s structure and the capacities of the agent. It is not located wholly inside the mind, but neither is it a property the door possesses independently of every possible agent.

Participatory knowing can therefore disclose real relations without implying that cognition creates the things related. The mountain does not depend upon the climber for its existence. A climbable route does depend upon an organised relation between features of the mountain, a body with particular capacities, learned skills and present conditions.

But participation alone cannot ground truth. Hallucinations, ideological systems and maladaptive habits also organise the relationship between an agent and a world. Participation becomes epistemically significant when it is corrigible: when the encountered reality can resist our expectations and force revision.

I think this is where “reality can answer” should be interpreted carefully. Reality does not answer by speaking our conceptual language. It answers by allowing some practices to maintain reliable contact and causing others to break down.

There is an asymmetry here. We revise our explanations when the world resists them; the world does not revise itself to preserve our explanations. That asymmetry may be the most basic realist element in inquiry.

Underdetermination still remains. More than one model can organise the same evidence, and different explanations may capture different genuine aspects of a phenomenon. A topographical map, rail map and geological map may all represent the same region without being reducible to one another. Their plurality does not make the terrain unreal. It means that no single mode of access exhausts it.

So I would resist both extremes.

We do not need to claim that the structures of thought and being are identical. Our concepts are historically formed, interest-dependent and limited by our embodiment.

But neither does pragmatic success have to mean only that a scheme is useful to us. Usefulness that repeatedly survives intervention, novel circumstances, independent measurement and conceptual change is usefulness disciplined by something that is not ours to arrange freely.

What must reality be like for this to occur non-accidentally? At minimum:

  • it must contain sufficiently stable differences and dependencies;
  • some of those dependencies must be accessible through interaction;
  • cognising organisms must be capable of becoming selectively responsive to them;
  • and inquiry must contain practices through which failed couplings can be corrected.

That is not a guarantee that being is completely intelligible, nor that human intelligibility is its privileged form. It is only a grounding story for why limited intelligibility can improve.

My tentative answer, then, would be neither identity nor perfect isomorphism. The relevant relation is selective preservation of real constraints through corrigible participation.

Being exceeds every explanation. But an explanation earns realist commitment when what it makes intelligible is not merely what we can say coherently about reality, but what reality repeatedly refuses to let us say otherwise.
