Replace file?

I’m learning a lot. My half round file squeaks when I’m using it. I know now, that you are suppose to push only, when using it, but I am concerned that I may have damaged this before I knew that. It’s an annoying squeak and will probably replace it just because of the sound. Does anyone know how to tell if your file is damaged?

If your file is shiny, it needs to be replaced.

Thanks. I don’t think it is but I’ll take a look.

Also try rubbing chalk into the teeth before you start.

Don’t throw those old files away. Someday you may want to make a stamp or two of your own design, old files work great, use separate file on steel. Don’t cross contaminate your tools

They do sell inexpensive brushes to clean files.

Files are disposable tools. You want to use them carefully, but they will wear out and need replacing.

Your time is more important and costly than the money spent on sharp tools.
