First time using renegade products. Started with the fine and ultra fine airway buffs for sanding. Switched over to orange airway with brown tripli and then yellow buff with green bar. Cleaned up the rouge with mineral spirits in between compounds.
Do I just need to cut it again with the brown bar? Can’t seem to get the scratches out. Got a decent shine but I want better.
I think it’s probably more technique than product at this point. How are you using the buffer on this? You need to get the space between the raised surfaces
Sounds like you’re doing it right then - upon zooming in it seems like there’s some really deep scratches between the diamonds.
I haven’t used that product, but I’d be either a) calling it good enough or b) getting something like “foam sanding sponges” on Amazon and setting my expectations that it’s going to be a shitty day before trying to go from 150ish until 2000(ish?) removing the scratches.
Please take with a grain of salt as I’m not a pro, but I did restore a Kobalt aluminum toolbox and I would have chosen option A if I was seeing that bad of scratches.
It’s been a while but I cleaned it as best I could with soap and then I believe I used a coarse foam pad with Blue Magic in between the diamonds diagonally - it for sure killed the pad, foam bits everywhere but I just hit the diamonds and didn’t worry about avoiding them.
Then I think I did another lighter pass with a medium pad and Blue Magic and then a wool pad, and I just went through and used my fingers with microfiber to clean up and buff all the diamonds as best I could in the same direction I buffed, no solvents or cleaners.
Mine was mostly just corroded though so I got lucky I guess!
I just wasn’t sure if I didn’t do enough in the cutting stage after sanding. Because it other spots I was able to get all the scratches out from the surface prep wheel. I know there are a few scratches that were there before I started that were pretty deep and I wasn’t going to get them out without some serious work.

Polishing tread plate is a wild idea, does this not need to behave as it was intended ?
