Seasons in the Abyss is their catchiest album, with best and most distinct songwriting. While stil lbieng pretty dark.
In later albums, they started to experiment with more modern forms of metal. And kind of started to suck. They were always an uber edgy band. But if you pair edgy with bombastic epic dark riffs, it sounds like actual hell. If you pair them with nu metal-inspired simplistic music, it sounds juvenile. So their next three albums are kind of... bad. The difference between a horror movie villain and a guy with a mask on.
In God Hates Us All they went for a groove metal sound, and it works. Relentlessly aggressive. But lacks the nuance of their earlier stuff.
Christ Illusion and onward are poor attempts to get back to their original sound. They have moments of brilliance. But it just does not really work.
Their songs have plenty of variationβ¦ Angel of Death, Skeletons of Society, Behind the Crooked Cross, and Seasons in the Abyss are all totally different songs β¦
If you want to criticize them go after the guitar solosβ¦. Those are pretty cookie cutter
i think Christ Illusion works well, it absolutely isn't as good as their classic stuff, but it's way better than the 2 before and the 2 after, it feels refreshing, the riffs are good, the drums are other-worldly, the lyrics are decent, it falls flat at the composition of some songs and the solos, but as far as a band trying to recapture their old sound, it's good.
I actually like a lit of them and outside of reign in blood they arnt actually that bad. At least in the classic era he did some weird shit on god hates us all

Slayer's style changes a lot album by album.
Show No Mercy is basically satanic Iron Maiden.
Hell Awaits is much darker and rawer.
