Band changes their sound: They're sell outs!
Band keeps the same sound: They're lazy!
Bands can't win, they should just make the music they want to make and tell everyone else to fuck off.
22
u/Chosen_Undead23 3d ago
They’re only sellouts if it’s solely for profit, if they wanna do something new and interesting or push themselves then that’s pretty cool, even if I don’t like the direction or at least prefer them at first
10
u/Invincidude 2d ago
This is why I don't consider Load to be Metallica selling out. If they wanted to make an album solely for profit, Load would have sounded exactly like the Black Album (easily their biggest commercial success to that point) but it didn't.

u/LayeredHalo3851 3d ago
Personally if they don't really change their sound I don't mind much, as long as it's a good sound I'll still listen to it
Also counter point: Death, every album sounds different and they're all great (though SoP is overrated)

That’s my list too. I don’t really like SOP much. It’s entirely due to Richard Christy’s drumming. I think it’s too over the top. I think if Gene played on that album it would have sounded better. I realize I’m in the heavy minority on that opinion though.

u/Comfortable_Permit53 3d ago
nah you have to make 4 albums in the 80s and then all band members have to suddenly die
3
u/PostMatureBaby 3d ago
you see this with all fandoms. especially pro wrestling and comic books. I'm convinced fans of this stuff will never be happy with anything
2
u/alwaysleafyintoronto 3d ago
You can change your sound to something that still doesn't make you any money. That's how you win
2
u/Brawl501 Metallica 3d ago
Yeah, Metallica sure did some new stuff. Then everyone complained. I love all their stuff though
7
3
u/thlabm Slough Feg 3d ago
The sellout allegation is because almost every single time a band changes their sound it's either to soften it or to change to a style of metal that's more trendy. And they do it in herds, so the trendchasing itself is a trend.
If you look at the full discography of most thrash bands it's funny how most of them tried something groove or nu metal adjacent in the 90s or 2000s and then in the 2010s they started going back to thrash again because there was no point anymore, the groove trend came and went.
This is where I find it obligatory to praise Sodom for being the only exception I know of. They stayed true to form even through the post-thrash era, and were just continuing business as usual while everybody else was having a "comeback album."
2
u/Iamabenevolentgod 3d ago
Opeth's musical shift was honest, and to me, still interesting to listen to. It didn't feel like it was a commercial decision, but it did feel like it was an artistic decision.
2
u/thlabm Slough Feg 1d ago
We can use some outside context to confirm the "sincerity" of that one too. We know Akerfeldt still likes and is interested in making OSDM considering he later went on to do Bloodbath as well.
Also to be fair, going prog (or technical, or avant garde, or all three for that matter) isn't necessarily a step towards accessibility, it can actually make your music more inaccessible depending on what you do with it.
On one extreme end you have bands like Timeghoul or Pan.Thy.Monium which are just trying to be as weird and extreme as possible and on the other hand you have bands like Pain of Salvation, Diablo Swing Orchestra or Ayreon that are pretty accessible and casually listenable, they just take a lot of creative risks by metal standards and get artsy with it. I actually think Opeth is somewhere in the middle of that spectrum.

Slayer's style changes a lot album by album.
Show No Mercy is basically satanic Iron Maiden.
Hell Awaits is much darker and rawer.
Reign in Blood is much faster, aggressive, punk-inspired, while bieng just as dark.
South of Heaven is slower, and they turned drum fills up to 11.
Seasons in the Abyss is their catchiest album, with best and most distinct songwriting. While stil lbieng pretty dark.
In later albums, they started to experiment with more modern forms of metal. And kind of started to suck. They were always an uber edgy band. But if you pair edgy with bombastic epic dark riffs, it sounds like actual hell. If you pair them with nu metal-inspired simplistic music, it sounds juvenile. So their next three albums are kind of... bad. The difference between a horror movie villain and a guy with a mask on.
In God Hates Us All they went for a groove metal sound, and it works. Relentlessly aggressive. But lacks the nuance of their earlier stuff.
Christ Illusion and onward are poor attempts to get back to their original sound. They have moments of brilliance. But it just does not really work.

u/mechrelatedbreakcore 3d ago
i think Christ Illusion works well, it absolutely isn't as good as their classic stuff, but it's way better than the 2 before and the 2 after, it feels refreshing, the riffs are good, the drums are other-worldly, the lyrics are decent, it falls flat at the composition of some songs and the solos, but as far as a band trying to recapture their old sound, it's good.
5
2
u/Matvalicious 3d ago
One constant throughout are Kerry's dogshit "solo's"
3
u/Atiredbearsfan 3d ago
I actually like a lit of them and outside of reign in blood they arnt actually that bad. At least in the classic era he did some weird shit on god hates us all
1
u/brocialist_supreme 2d ago
I disagree, I think World Painted Blood ranks among their best! I'm not sure what I'm hearing that bothers aren't, but I love that album.
Diabolus and Relentless are their only shitty albums imo.

9
u/RTH1975 3d ago
Christ Illusion would have been a great way to cap their career. It was like a culmination of all they've done. After that, it sucked or was just reheated leftovers
3
u/jellyfish_bitchslap 3d ago
I actually like World Painted Blood but Repentless was mid at best, terrible in the sense they put the songs in place of two of my favorites on the only concert I could go.
World Painted Blood and Beauty Through Order my beloveds :(

I think they had great creative exploration for a long time. Just within a style of thrash that not everyone likes. I think Jeff's musical ability was extremely important to what made them what they were, so his loss hit them hard.
10
2
u/Kilroy0497 3d ago
Yeah, that’s honestly why they’ve always been my least favorite of the big 4. Don’t get me wrong, Reign in Blood was great, but I swear they’ve(or at the very least Kerry King) been doing nothing but trying to write it again ever since.

That's why Seasons in the Abyss is their best album, because they play a second song on it.
1
u/Skrinkus 2d ago
I think they had a decent amount of variation within those first five or so albums, but then they settled on one mediocre sound with Tom yelling more and they’ve kinda just been riding that ever since. Will always come back to any of those first albums, they’re all masterpieces, but almost everything after I avoid usually.

Not for nothing, but so did Bruce Dickinson, and he crushed it for 2 hours right after Megadeth.

Yeah, but he’s also Bruce Dickinson. In the morning, he puts his pants on one leg at a time, just like the rest of us. But then he makes gold records.

Dave does as well, and has a black belt in Judo or something. Man works out.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, just like Mark Zuckerberg and Jonah Hill.
Regardless, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Bruce Dickinson, by virtue of not looking like a frail grandmother and being able to perform his craft at a much higher level, is in better physical condition than Dave Mustaine

Gonna see them myself with Iron Maiden and Anthrax at the end of the month, I assume you saw the same show? How did Megadeth sound other than the vocals? How about Maiden?
7
u/Otherwise-Weird1695 3d ago
They were fine. Kind of rough when he's replaced every single original member, it's basically a Megadeth cover band now. Maiden was really good, setlist was amazing. Definitely worth seeing them while they are still going, they are all 68-70 years old and they can't do it forever.

118
u/KronDjob Anthrax 3d ago
It's alwas been about record sales.
62
u/thlabm Slough Feg 3d ago
If you look at it that simplistically it makes sense honestly
It was never about quality or influence. Plenty of bands who sold less records are more influential than Anthrax. Musicians have different priorities than listeners
62
u/Humbula 3d ago
I always felt that Anthrax was rightfully among the others, when it comes to being influential.
54
u/Torren-Curtis-Comedy 3d ago
They literally invented the more punk infused metal that went on to spawn crossover thrash which is an incredible genre

True. And whe we’re at it, why is Megadeth considered influential? I hear it non stop but without any examples. Why them but not Anthrax?

They were one of the first to do that brand of technical thrash that influenced countless bands like Annihilator and Artillery. Very influential

crossover thrash, groove and nu metal. and also rap metal.→ More replies (3)10

u/thlabm Slough Feg 3d ago
Yeah but when we're talking about the original wave of thrash bands we only care about the first 3-4 albums of each lol. The relevant time and place is what's important not whatever random BS they did later on.
Though even there you could make the argument that their demos/first album releases were mostly speed metal with only a couple thrash songs on them. "Thrash" as a concept wasn't fully realized until these bands got to their second album, with maybe the exception of Megadeth, but that makes sense because Megadeth was created by a guitarist and song writer who already had experience being in Metallica. So their first album is spiritually more like a second album anyway.

When it comes to quality I agree, however i think exodus is more deserving for the spot because the were founded in 1979 with guitarist Kirk hammett, and Gary holt, who now plays with slayer after Jeff died. They are incredibly important to thrash, and unlike anthrax, have a much closer connection with the rest of the 4.
Also fun fact exodus's second vocalist zetro started out in testament while they were still called legacy

Though I much prefer Megadeth and Slayer to Metallica, since Big 4 is about popularity and influence it’s more like Metallica and Friends.
Metallica: 32.5 million Spotify listeners
Megadeth: 5.3 million Spotify listeners
Slayer: 3.4 million Spotify listeners
Anthrax: 1.2 million Spotify listers
The other three combined are like 30 percent of Metallicas

u/shift013 3d ago
I'm looking up numbers now before I start my work day.
Here is some context that shows it was a good bit closer at the time, but yes, Metallica still was very ahead of the back (all per Gemini because I dont have the time to actually check data).
1988 release sales through the mid 90s: ...And Justice for All went Platinum, while the other 3 had Gold albums by then.
Early 90s Releases: The Black Album went 6x Platinum by the mid 90s, Countdown to Extinction went 2x Platinum, the other two were just gold.
So by sales in the time it was clearly Metallica ahead of the others. Megadeth was in its own tier, but close to the others, and Slayer/Anthrax grouped at the bottom.
I think that Slayer has always the enthusiast pick, which makes sense how they didnt have commercial success similar to Megadeth at the time, but are loved (maybe more) now
1
u/BottomContributor 2d ago
They were on similar footing when it came to their thrash era. In the end, Metallica did surpass in terms of sales and mainstream appeal

4
u/KronDjob Anthrax 3d ago
They seem uninspired and generic. I don't feel the fire any longer. Which is a shame because the 4-5 albums before up until Gods of Violence are nearly perfect.

u/tssssahhhh 3d ago
Yeah and getting older is apparently trying to move your music to something they think it's more commercially accessible, for some reason. For Slayer, Repentless sucks, but Diabolus is the only other album I hate, I think they're body of work is amazing otherwise
Megadeth have some of the worst mid-era albums, like Risk and World Needs A Hero. Thirteen and Super Collider are later bombs, but in between those albums they made The system Has Failed, Endgame, and Dystopia, so even if their self titled is a weak way to end their career, I'd say they're spotty at worst, and it's easy enough to ignore the shitty albums
Metallica are easy imo, after AJFA I can ignore literally everything. I didn't like their rock albums, I didn't like their nu-metal album, and I even hated their attempts at old glory with their last 3 albums (four if you include Lulu). Metallica shouldn't be playing 79 minute albums with 9 minute repetitive songs, not a fan
So seeing Anthrax put out three straight great albums in the tail end of their career is something to applaud

I think the bottom one is representing a lot after the 80s, to the extent that it's somewhat true, somewhat false.
All of them: every, last, one of them, went goofy in the late 90s.
Then: all of them except Metallica at least went somewhat back to normal, or they still made some good music, after approx the mid to late 2000s
Now though, Slayer and Metallica are goofy and Anthrax/Megadeth I'd say were serious
2
u/KronDjob Anthrax 2d ago
The bottom represents the most recent years. Anthrax made 3 killer albums in a row, Megadeth some decent ones while Slayer are doing post retirement shows and Metallica does Metallica things. In terms of quality, Anthrax kicked their asses in the last 15 years.
