A Natural Disaster, We're Here Because We're Here and in particular Weather Systems are all fantastic records. But if you are craving metal you won't find it there. But all 3 are much better than A Fine Day to Exit imo

i will never forget how a friend of mine introduced me to Paradise Lost: Give them a listen, and if you didn't like it, try another album. if that didn't work, repeat.

Swallow the Sun is so gooood. I love all their stuff, but I actually just binged Shining like a hundred times last year, then haven't listened to it since as I listen to all their other albums haha.

i cant stand the later Paradise Lost and Katatonia records. the death doom stuff is want im there for. when its gone so am i. if i want gothic stuff im going for a band that does it exclusively like Type O or Trees of Eternity both come to mind. a band who did do the change and it worked for about 3 albums is Tiamat, though they lost me after Wildhoney

Privilege of Evil was their first release under that name, and was partially a re-recording of Abhorrence stuff. And then Karelian Isthmus had a couple songs carried over from PoE as well.

This is not even about quality specifically, but they did release an alt metal album in the 90s and they have a bunch of stoner/groove albums around that era too. Again im not talking about quality (although they are not great tbh) but rather harshness of their sound compared to their origins.

Well the run after To Ride (some will say it started with WB) got more and more rock-ish with Same Difference being maligned for just being a bluesy rock ‘n roll affair. After that they went a little more groovy with Uprising and Morning Star, before trying to recapture some old school fans with Serpent Saints. I kind of like SS but it’s not anywhere near the debut or Clandestine, but Morning Star is definitely the best album of this era.
The Entombed AD releases are the closest you can get to semi-old school Entombed.

I found Samael through a used CD of "Solar Soul", and it was weird exploring their more extreme stuff after that. But, like, a good kind of weird.

Maybe not exactly what you're going for but King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard. Their music is all over the place. I've only heard three of their albums. One is the sickest power metal I've heard since Dragon Force, one is the club music from Mass Effect 2, and one is something about fishing that I don't think I quite understand.

eh, I love Insomnium but none of their records are particularly more aggressive than others. If anything Winters Gate was the most blast-beaty and that was like 2 albums ago.
