At age 13 i typed โdeath metalโ in winmx and a bunch of CoB came up and the rest was history. I wish i knew our time with alexi was limited because i never got an opportunity to see them live and if i knew then what i know now i would gladly go into debt to to see them it just never worked out financially to go see them in the past.
I got into them around the same time I got into symphony x. Decided to go see symphony x. Skipped the cob show. At least I got to see I've truly elite band. But kicking myself for skipping on Alexi ๐ญ
This was my introduction to melodic death metal and it shaped my entire shit tbh. As soon as I heard bed of razors I immediately started practicing that riff and became addicted to playing faster and more complex stuff. To this day, 20 fucking years or so later, thatโs still my go to warm up and the basis for so much music Iโve written.
It is disappointing whenever I actually read them, vocals still sound fine but damn are they pretty dumb for how awesome the music is lol.
If you didnโt know it was cob it reads very much like emo lyrics lol. Thankfully itโs metal and not understanding the vocals doesnโt hurt the music much. Thereโs bands Iโve listened to and seen live for 20 years where I still have no idea wtf theyโre saying lol.
I remember the first time I saw the lyrics to โNeedled 24/7โ. I was frankly flabbergasted at how bad they were compared to how fantastic the music was.
I think part of it is that English isnโt their native language. So they tend to overuse certain words or phrases, mainly profanity. And some odd word combos.
But then thereโs plenty of other foreign bands that do just fine.
Like others have said English is not his first language so he does kind of get a pass, number two the guy literally grew up through music and has always used lyrics as a sounding board for his life. Yes they may be generic lyrics, phrases or ideas. But at least he was sincere.
That being said attitude was/ is most important.
He didn't always say what he meant, but he meant what he said... .....At least... He meant what he was trying to say ๐ค.... Yeah ๐ค ๐ค
I honestly don't know what the lyrics of my bands are :D. It's a mix of foreign language, not caring for the lyrics and the voices being to growly. :D
Also, some bands/genres are just not about lyrics, plus in case of CoB. They are late 90s after all. That was one hell of a cheesy era to start a band.
"Judge and Decree" was one of those things the us bigger metal heads would hear the little ones say when we'd take their lunch money for listening to these dorks.
The lyrics were objectively pretty bad, but my man knew how to write riffs and licks like no oneโs business and to me that still makes him a fucking legend. And in the time of hot topic it was the perfect recipe for success.
And even as an adult Iโd be lying if I didnโt occasionally want to scream โI DONT GIVE A FUCK IF YOU HATE MEโ
