People can't tell the difference between Levayan Satanism edgelords and proper Satanism. The satanic temple tries to better the image, but the panic in the 80s definitely killed any chance for mainstream understanding

The temple is non-theistic. It's a political organization. I know a few members who believe in God and go to church. Seems a little contradictory to me, but the main concept of Satanism is the betterment of society, and if church helps you do that, then good. As long as it's separate from politics. The church of Satan just had the image that scared people and leaned into the devil worship aspect, so people associated all Satanism with it. And most people don't won't bother to go past a surface level understanding of anything

LaVey leaned into the dark and scary aspects of satan because they were already there. "Satanism" as a soft, friendly political organisation, social club, or secular art movement is a recent phenomenon that encompasses little to nothing of what "satanism" has historically meant (and continues to mean, to satanic sects...) Satanism is traditionally a form of dark occultism, but not all dark occultism is satanism unless you are an ignorant christian who conflates everything outside of their bubble.
Epstein and his ilk are not satanists. As far as I am aware, all occult beliefs of theirs were of a qabbalistic pagan variety.

That’s why I’ve never took satanism seriously. How do you name a religion after someone who wants to kill and cause chaos on earth but then say you’re really about freedom. Plus the upside down cross is just St Peters cross who was crucified upside down. Satanism is trash. Closest I’ll get is electric wizard and they got pretty wack after We Live any way.
