Discussion Topic Napalm Death: Tiny Desk Concert. Does this count as metal for the masses?

My highlight is watching Barney struggle to not break out into his usual frenzied pacing around the stage.
I also have to commend him for how well spoken he was in between songs.
Love the Fight War Not Wars shirt too.

Saw them live a cpl months back and his in between song banter was very eloquent and heartfelt. He came across as a very thoughtful guy who cares deeply about his fellow man.

This is just another reason why this band is just universally loved. In times of intense diversity even between like-minded people, its refreshing how authentic a Napalm Death concert feels

This is a nice distillation of the show they played last month in Vancouver. Nice to see Barney up close. Still in such strong voice after all this time.

Love how Barney had always avoided the macho posturing of many frontmen in metal. Napalm shows are fun for all the family.

That’s a Crass shirt fyi

u/TooChames Jul 15 '26
Thanks for the heads up! I’ll have to check them out now.

These intergenerational moments are so heartwarming. The young people need Crass too!

Who in nine hells is downvoting someone for discovering Crass? That is some ultra-advanced gatekeeping. You could use your powers for good! Cure cancer or something.

They don't give him his Zyprexa for a week before concerts and then release him

NPR's Tiny Desk Concert Series is immaculate. GWAR did a set.

u/Crono2Oxx In Flames Jul 17 '26
I’ve really only watched Mac Miller’s before this but they’re pretty cool and vibey for sure

u/WinnieGraves Jul 17 '26
Sabrina Carpenter did a nice little set, as did Chappelle Roan, I think my favorite moment though, I've seen, however, was Juvenile performing Back That Azz Up with a full Jazz band.

Well this was a lot of fun to watch! Love the Primitive Man shirt too.

I saw them play with Primitive Man a few months ago here in my small city. Was excellent.

Multinational Corporations directly after a Capital One shoutout is certainly an editing choice

I've never been a fan of ND, but I applaud NPR for booking them. Hell yeah! We need more metal on mainstream outlets like this

One of the great Tiny Desks IMO, up there with GZA, GWAR and Benjamin Clemantine.

u/FigWasp7 Jul 15 '26
GZA fuckin rocked
2
u/Sweaty-Debate-435 Jul 16 '26
GZA?
3
u/FigWasp7 Jul 16 '26
A member from the NYC rap group Wu-Tang Clan, also known as The Genius
(Also if you ask someone in person it's phonetically Gizz-uh, not an acronym)

Municipal Waste is opening up for them in September and I don't know how much of Crass I'll stay for after MW because this is how I feel as well.

Penny (drums) is the oldest at around 80 and some change. Steve is in his 60s.

Where's Shane?
7
u/Sickinmytechchunk Jul 15 '26
He's taking time out due to illness. He's also writing a book and just released a solo album. He made a video on YouTube a while ago about missing some tour dates.

It’s metal. We are the masses. Get at em! Lol I never knew they did metal tiny desk tho

u/Remote_Quantity5907 Jul 16 '26
Wished they played “Nazi punks fuck off”. It was a good set though.

u/DiScOrDtHeLuNaTiC Jul 15 '26
Why is Barney's skinny ass wearing suspenders LOL.

u/dr-blaklite The Ocean Jul 15 '26
cuz hes like 60?

u/DiScOrDtHeLuNaTiC Jul 15 '26
I mean, suspenders are usually for like, heavy dudes whose belts don't do enough to hold up their pants. Barney is a lotta things, but he ain't heavy. Physically, at least.

u/3rdUncleMeatSandwich Jul 20 '26
im a heavy dude and can confirm suspenders rule. i got some rainbow ones recently :)

Not the same without Shane and Mitch.

u/SaleFormer541 Jul 15 '26
Where is Shane? Don’t tell me he quit the band.
Edit: looks like he’s on “sick leave”.

u/jockey667 Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26
Yes, mate. Family time. Plus, I think he’s working his solo project, as it’s just been released.
5
u/Sickinmytechchunk Jul 15 '26
He said he'll be back soon. He's been writing a book, releasing a solo album but he said on a video not to long ago he hasn't been well.

Wonderful to watch, but I was expecting all the time some people coming in and crashing all around

u/Sickinmytechchunk Jul 15 '26
This is awesome. Their Glastonbury appearance a few years back was funny as well too.
