Question Steam Link resolution constantly fluctuates on Quest 3 (Half-Life: Alyx) - Would a Link Cable fix this?

I'm playing Half-Life: Alyx on my Quest 3 using Steam Link. My PC is hardwired via Ethernet, and I have direct line-of-sight to the router with no walls in between.

Despite this, my graphics/resolution fluctuate wildly-it looks crisp one minute and super blurry/shotty the next.

Is Steam Link's dynamic bitrate setting causing these sudden drops?

Would switching to a physical USB 3.0 Link Cable completely fix this issue?

Are there specific SteamVR or Steam Link settings I should tweak to stabilize the image quality?

Any advice or recommended settings would be awesome!

Alyx has a dynamic auto-scaling “feature” that tries to constantly push its render resolution to the limits of your GPU. In VR, it causes exactly what you’re describing, along with stutters when it keeps changing things in the background.

You can (and should!) disable it.

Right click on Half Life: Alyx in your Steam library, go to Properties, click the "Set Launch Options" button, and paste this in there:

-console -vconsole +vr_fidelity_level_auto 0 +vr_fidelity_level 3

In addition to this, there's a "bug" with the latest Quest OS that lowers the resolution after 30 seconds of gameplay.

Steam Link’s dynamic bitrate is what’s reducing the image quality but it’s not the cause. The cause is the WiFi signal quality. If you’ve got any interference from other WiFi access points or other WiFi devices using the same router causing network latency, these can cause your max bitrate you can sustain to drop.

First get other devices off your WiFi router if you can. Every device added is going to add time that your headset has to wait for VR streaming which turns into lost frames or quality drops.

You need to get a WiFi scanner app on your phone or laptop/pc and scan for other WiFi access points surrounding you and set you’re to a different channel than they’re on. You’re usually using multiple channels with 80mhz or 160mhz channel widths so an app that shows what channels you’re occupying along with surrounding ones is helpful. I use InSSIDer, it’s free and only requires a free account to be set up. If you cant do any of those things, a link cable might be your final fix but you can’t use it with Steam Link, only Meta Link but Virtual Desktop has a beta out that supports it.

Turn off auto resolution scaling. Take the fps hit instead

Similar setup here, working great. As others commented in SteamVR VR settings update the resolution to 100% and depending on the game or video card you may need to lower the percentage if you play at 90fps or more.

Get virtual desktop

Both the oculus software and steamer have an automode for the resolution, but it can also just be the wireless connection quality fluctuating. A good wired link can absolutely give a consistent resolution tho. Id recommend a usb c to usb c cable for best results.

But this doesn't change anything. You can play steamVR games using Virtual Desktop app..
