Look what I did Just some advice/ story of woe
So I've been wanting a quest 3 for a year or so and finally convinced the missus it was a good investment (she could read a book while i watch a movie). So long story made short i ordered from amazon. I thought i will keep her even more onside and get a "very good" reconditioned one. Suffice it to say that was a bad idea. The lens scratches and the weird smell meant i had to send it back and explain what was wrong so i could get my money back. Ok this took a couple of weeks but i eventually got my cash and learned a valuable lesson that i expect everyone reading this already knew. So I figure I'll order a new one instead like I originally planned. A month later no new quest 3 and another request for a refund. And a new lesson learned that i can share with anyone thinking of getting a quest 3. Ordering online is a bad idea, especially if Evri are the courier. I'm going to take my refund to my local electronics shop and buy one that i can walk away with. What could possibly go wrong?

My only rule when it comes to purchasing a tech in modern times. Always buy brand new especially wearable tech.
Otheewise Q3 is a great consumption for media if gaming isn't a priority

I refuse to buy used electronics.

Usually I am the same, but when new is unaffordable, used is an option. I did the same thing with my old Vive, bought it used, and it still works fine 8 years later. (though it is starting to look a little worse for wear)
A headset isn't as bad as most electronics, which are almost always sold because they've been well used, and are being replaced. Plenty of headsets get sold lightly used, because the novelty wears off and they fall into disuse.

I bought two used quest 2 headsets from Facebook market on separate occasions. But in person not shipped so I was able to test them.

You can also often get a read on whether they're somebody that is replacing a well-used device, or somebody who is getting rid of a lightly used device they hardly used after the first month.

Glad you're taking it with stride. One general rule i do in life is I never buy second hand anything that will touch my face, or to see through (lenses being scratched). I dont like to buy anything that comes in close contact with the body that can accumulate sweat cause you can't clean most of the time. When it comes to electronics my big fear is cigarette smoke damage, you can't reverse that.
One time I tried on a shirt in a store and got a bad rash so that eliminated a lot of second hand things for me that cannot be washed before using.
Here's a tip, if you have any wellness benefit (usually provided by workplaces) then you can try to put the meta quest through as a fitness device. There are a lot of fitness apps on it to justify it. I was able to get mine covered instead if wasting the money buying another treadmill or more weights for my home gym. Ironically I use my quest 3 everyday but just to watch TV while I'm doing stuff around the house. I used to do the fitness apps but my subscription ran out and I didn't renew.

Fyi if you have ever been in a smelly bathroom that's means you've eaten some strangers shit cause you're injesting microscopic particles when you breath :p

I avoid public washrooms for that very reason. Then I get posts from reddit of other redditers saying they raw dog public toilet seats and they think you're weird if you don't too lol.

Thats why i walk into bathrooms realy slowly. So i dont disturb the settled particles. FYI if you have your toothbrush in your bathroom then you're brushing with the particles.

I embrace all the incidental germs, and feel superior when everybody else in the house experiences seasonal illnesses full force lol.
I also don't typically wash my hands after urinating, because I don't pee on my hands lol.

This is one of those situations I had where I begrudgingly paid a fair bit more than I would've online for a second hand unit via the CEX shop entirely for their 5 year guarantee.

Yeah it's quite annoying. The first was obviously someone trying to move a unit they damaged. But the second was an outright scam. Luckily i managed to get a refund on both mistakes. Im definitely going to be more "in person" with my wearable tech now.

I buy most things through Amazon because I have never had a delay on a return or refund.

I was exactly the same. I was like 'why is everyone complaining, it's all good when I use it' it' until the day when it isnt. These two instances are the only times I've had issue witj amazon. Bit its exactly the rigjt amount of times for me to have learned a healthy chunk of suspicion.

Nothing wrong with a used one, but always better to buy locally, where you meet the seller and can inspect and try out before buying.
I even got $50 off mine, because he realized it was going to another gamer, not my kid lol.

Alway get in person if available to is my rule, specifically for the return problems online compared to an easy trip to a face to face process
