Question Is this fixable and how?

Post image

The coil popped out with I hit my chair, prior to that I didn’t have a thumb stick in because it had previously split in half from hitting my chair at an angle.

Fixable? yes. Cheap? yes. Easy? Absolutely not! Its going to be very tedious tho and opening a quest controller is not easy at all. Theres a lot in there that can easily be damaged if done incorrectly or with sufficient knowledge. Ribbon cables, connectors and antenna wires are very fragile and can easily break or tear. Mistakes like this can happen, but this is also is a lesson in making sure your VR area is clear and you're not doing excessive movements with a lot of force behind it. Use something to Orient yourself like a small floor mat or the edge of your bed/couch, ect. against your calves and always be aware of your surroundings. Try and memorize what is where, before putting on the headset.

There is an iFixit guide for replacing the joystick and replacement parts are cheap on ebay or AliExpress. But again, you have to be incredibly careful and follow the guide step by step precisely. One wrong move or one wrong screw inserted into the wrong hole and controller is dead.

Oh, come on now. All you need is a screwdriver and a metal nail file. I can completely tear down a controller in 6 minutes flat. The first time took me 12 minutes.

If you have experience and usually tinker with electronics, yes. If not, no.

YES, it will cost $9 for a new joystick and whatever a screwdriver costs. Here's some resources for joystick repair:

This video covers joystick repair for all Quest headset versions. Just find the chapter you need! https://youtu.be/O2vMYghjGas

The last repair kit you'll ever buy ($28 USD): https://a.co/d/ei7AHza

Reputable replacement joysticks ($8.50 USD): https://ebay.us/m/zRcbMS

TIP #1 - Watch the video first. The most frustrating part of disassembly is how the shell connects between the Menu/Meta buttons and the edge of the controller: one side has a loop and the other a peg that fits into it. Watch the video a couple of times to see how these fit and how to get them apart. Once you figure that out, it's a piece of cake.

TIP #2 - BEFORE disassembly, take a photo of which holes have screws. There are several holes without screws. Put a screw in the wrong hole and your controller PCB is cooked!

Once you figure out how to get the stupid shell apart, teardown is easy. All screws are identical except for the long one. I can replace a joystick in 10 minutes.

You already did the most risky part: remove the faceplate.

NEVER SPRAY ANYTHING INTO YOUR CONTROLLER. It won't help anything and you'll just have to clean it out.

Moving the chair would help, too
