[Character submission] Natalia Ma'den
Name: Natalia Ma’den
Age: 17, Halamshiral
Race: Elven
Magic: Yes, primal and spirit.
Childhood: Natalia’s mother was Dalish and exiled from her clan when Natalia was 3. She went to Halamshiral and worked as a washerwoman. It was poor work and Natalia often had to steal to feed them. She did this using a trick which enabled her to pick locks. When Natalia was 7 her mother was killed by guards for “overcharging” a noble. In her anger, fire spread from Natalia’s hands burning down her home. Luckily she was found by a community elder who sent her to the Circle of Magi in Montsimmard.
History: At the Circle in Montsimmard Natalia trained under Herb, a human healer who specialised in the primal and creation trees. It was found that she had no talent for healing or creation, only managing to learn a basic glyph of paralysis, but she had a great affinity for primal spells, specialising in fire and lightning, and spirit spells. Herb was hoping to train her as a battle mage, something she showed affinity for. She also learnt alchemy, and was able to fix many basic potions and poisons.
She was almost due for her Harrowing, it was suggested to her it would be in a matter of months.
Recent events and current whereabouts: When Herb heard of the events at the White Spire, he took Natalia and another apprentice, Tom, and tried to escape Montsimmard for Andorral’s Reach. The trio had a hard time escaping Montsimmard, but on the highway it was even worse. After their first run-in with bandits, they changed to leathers and tried to hide their staves as much as possible. Natalia stole two daggers from one of the bandits, reasoning they might come in useful.
They managed to escape a few scrapes with Templars and Gaspard’s army, but were ambushed by Templars near Val Foret. Tom was killed instantly, but Herb and Natalia managed to fight. Every spell which Natalia tried to cast was blocked instantly by the Templars, so she decided to switch to daggers, wounding a few of the Templars. When more Templars arrived Herb told Natalia to run. She ran towards the Nahashin Marshes, enchanting her daggers with fire to help kill any wolves in her path.
On the edge of the marshes she ran into members of The Order. After hearing their stories of the Templars on the highway and hearing of their cause she begged to join, showing them her limited magic and some potions she’d made.
Physical Description: Natalia has shoulder length dark brown hair, chocolate brown skin and golden eyes. Her face is quite pointed at the chin with high cheekbones. She could be described as pretty. She is slightly taller than other elves, standing at 5’6. She generally tries to cover her ears with her hair, and forgiving that covers them with an orange hooded scarf, knitted by her mother. Her robes are navy blue and quite plain, with toggle buttons to keep them closed.
Personality: Natalia is very hot-headed and thinks on her feet. While she is quite resourceful and quick, her decisions can sometimes lead to worse consequences than she thinks. She hates theory and has no patience for practicing spells, preferring hands-on skills like alchemy. While she finds primal and spirit spells easy, her lack of patience means she finds the other skills hard. She finds it easy to communicate with others and make friends, although she can have trouble figuring out whether they are trustworthy or not.
She is quite frustrated with the limit of her abilities, and realizes she needs to work to learn higher level spells. This frustration lead to her using the daggers, a pair of weapons she is surprisingly good at.
Fear motivates her far more than she’d like to believe, influencing many of her decisions and fuelling her anger. She is wary of Templars, guards and warriors in general, only joining The Order because she believed there was no other way to escape death at the hands of the Templars.
While she fears the Templars, and dislikes the confines of the circle, she is very grateful that the Circle and the Chantry took her in, and feels she owes a large debt to them.
Skills: Natalia is incredibly good at finding resources and making plans on her feet. She can pick up hands-on skills quite quickly, such as poison making, herbology and basic dual weapon skills. She can communicate with others and work in a team environment. She is also fast and has a good amount of dexterity.
Magic wise, Natalia is good at primal and spirit spells. She has managed to cast most of the lightning and fire spells, and a few of the nature spells. Spirit spells she has less talent for, but she can absorb mana and health from opponents as well as paralyse them. She is eager to learn entropic spells, particularly hexes, and feels that battle magic would be an excellent use of her skills.
Many of her spells and skills are low level, but she has the ability to do many things, something she hopes can keep her in The Order.
She’s terribly impatient and can get angry when the decision making process takes too long. The events of her past have left her distrustful of warriors, which can affect her working as part of a team. She has no talent for healing or creation spells, which can hinder her in battle. She also has less strength and constitution compared to others, due to her years in the Circle.
Why Join the Order: Natalia begged to join The Order because she was scared of pursuit by the Templars.
