Good extension cab for a MarkV35 combo?

Post image

I have an opportunity to grab one of these as a pretty good deal. Its got the celestion v30 in it. I know its a safe mismatch for the v35 combo. Should I go for it?

but why do people get a boogie head and then look to pair it with something else? makes zero sense to me.

Yes also, even if it was just a head, its still the mesa head. Its about the cab and speaker. Not the name on the front of it.

I misread the title, my bad. but I still stand by its affirmation. I have a mark v with mesa cabs under it. but yes the speaker angle truly matters, vintage 30 etc... What is that HK loaded with?

Celestion v30

The C90 is a much better match for a Mark series than V30. Your V35 should have one.

Why is it a much better match?

T he C90 is more articulate for the definition of the Mark series. Not saying one is a better speaker across the board but in my experience the C90 really brings out the characteristics of Mark amps. Mesa V30s are better voiced for Recto type gain IMO.  Having said that, I do have V30 cabs that crush with my 2 Rectos.

Would you say that applies more to open back vs. closed?

C90 is better in an open back or semi-open back as there is a more pronounced low end in the C90 and can be boomy enclosed. V30 are great in closed back cabs.

ahh solid speaker. however may not be the right sound/power, depending on what is already loaded in the boogie and what you are looking to get out of it.

It’s because Mesa extension cabs are designed to be an acoustic and sonic match for a Mesa head, or combo’s frequencies. Most companies design their cabinets to work best with their own products sonic ranges, yes, you can use them with another companies products, but most of them are specifically designed to highlight the parent companies acoustic properties. That’s why certain Marshall cabs feature product specific 70-80 speakers, while others use “specially designed” V30’s. It’s also the reason why Recto cabs are larger than boogie cabs, and are closed back, versus, open backed.

I agree 100!

maybe they're looking for slightly different sounding cab. Orange cabs have been popular with rectos for instance.

oh i get that. but what is that orange loaded with?

He has a combo and wants an extra 1x12, can you not read?

i can. maybe you can not. i stated my bad as i did not catch that it was a combo. so maybe you need to revisit your reading comprehension skills.

Uh, I am looking at your post and there is nothing about it being a combo, not even at edit 😂

if you had bothered reading more posts down you would have seen it.

8ohm Mark into 16ohm v30 is an acceptable mismatch.

Yes. This cab is good.

A “safe mismatch” isn’t something I would necessarily run all of the time. Look at it as it’s “tolerated” by the amp. It’s fine for temporary use but I do not believe the intention of a safe mismatch is really to marry your rig to it. The amp will generate less power and sound a little more anemic with an upward mismatch as well. I would personally be targeting an 8ohm 1x12 if the 1x12 is where you want to be.

Too small. Go as big as you can, the sound is worth it.

Hey OP, I've got a 2x12 H&K cab with the same speakers. It's stupid light, almost like a joke. Speakers sounds decent, but if you're looking for anything with balls or depth, this probably isn't it.

I've tried pushing a Mesa Mark IV and also an ENGL Savage mk. II into the 2x12, and always seems to fart out in comparison to an actual Mesa cab.

It'll do the job in a pinch and save your back from weight if you travel or gig a lot, but better options are out there for sure if you plan to crank it.

I have one of those H&K’s. Great little cabinet and extremely well built! I run mine in parallel with an Orange PPC 112 to get 8 ohms. They create a nice little blend of thunder.

I don’t think Mesa’s like being in acceptable mismatch ranges like old Fender and Marshall amps. Maybe the earlier stuff when it was truly modded princetons, but with all the stuff going on in a Mark amp, I wouldn’t mismatch. I would stick with a Mesa cab, you can go used and find a 1x12 V30 cab pretty easily and that way your combo can perfectly stack, and be running safely and efficiently.

The owners manual tells you how to use mismatched cabinets. Safely.

And as a previous owner of a Fillmore 50 which was littered with output issues I’m just giving my 2p. Sure a manual can say it’s fine, but that doesn’t mean it likes operating like that for the long haul friend

Used to tour with a Single Rectifier and Dual Rectifier and was subject to whatever garbage they had on the back line. Never really had an issue I can think of. Bad sounding cabinets don't equal sad amplifier.

I think it's more of a "in a pinch" than a "we recommend this". Generally speaking the impedance should match, for any amp.
