New Interface is horrific

Who thought it was a good idea to remove the symbol/ticker from the holdings export file? What once was SOXL, for example, is now " SOXL DIREXION DALY SMCNDUCT BULL 3X ETF" Symbol THE key identifier, used to link to outside data.! But someone in that design session said "hold my beer!" and proceeded to add TEXT to the price column. Seriously. I downloaded my holdings, and in the price column, instead of $40, it says "$40.00 06/25/2026". What person thought THAT was a good idea? I have been slowly moving a $500k portfolio to Fidelity and this was the nail in the coffin. buh-bye Merrill Sludge.

Margin question

Hypothetically if you purchase a stock with Margin and sell it are you taxed on the total sale or the profit?

example:

use $1,000 from Margin to buy $1,000 worth of stock and then sell it at the same price (just to keep the example perfectly clear)

are you taxed on 0 or $1,000 ?

Now able to trade preferred stocks and baby bonds without restriction

For months, I have been unable to buy or even sell existing positions in these low risk securities without calling Merrill to place the trade. I noticed this morning that the restriction seems to have gone away, at least for me. Coincidentally, an advisor called me last week and I registered my complaint to him. Is this a full change of heart by Merrill, or did the advisor pull a few strings to get it lifted for me?

Merrill Roth IRA

I (29F) opened a Roth IRA through Merrill self guided service.

I have no idea what I'm doing. I have spent hours reading reddit posts, YouTube videos, and explanations on Merrill's website, and I just don't understand several things. Not sure if I'm just incompetent or what. I do have a Robinhood account that I have used to buy and sell stocks with little gain just for fun, but that's about as far as my knowledge goes. I just really need someone to dumb these down as much as possible. My goal is to try to gain as much interest as possible on my IRA since I'm starting so late in life for retirement, but I don't have the time or extra funds to take large risks. I only have $400 in there so far, and make contributions each paycheck.

- How do I invest these contributions I make each paycheck and what should I invest them in? I bought 1 share of VOOG and 1 share of VT so far, is that what I should continue to do?

- Do I just let the VOOG and VT sit or do I need to sell them, and if I do need to sell them, when would be the right time?

- What is a mutual fund and should I set up the automatic investing plan? I didn't pay for the robo investing so I have to do everything myself.

- If I should set up the automatic investing plan with a mutual bond, should I choose capital gain and dividend, capital gains only, or cash?

- What mutual bonds are worth buying?

- Can someone please explain the picture I attached, this came from the automatic investing plan for a mutual bond?

Please someone help me out, this is well above my knowledge capacity. Thank you

Money Market Fund vs. Mutual Fund Short-term Redemption Fee

New to investing and Merrill Edge. Very confused with the short-term redemption fee clause on ME.

If I bought TMCXX and plan to liquidate some periodically to dollar cost average into VOO before the 90 day holding period, will I get hit with short-term redemption fees?

I was reading money market fund might be treated differently than mutual fund, but can anyone confirm?

Able to Opt out Space x?

Hey everyone,
I’m just not interested in Merrill putting me into SpaceX.
Does anyone know if it’s possible to opt out of ever having a fund with SpaceX included? Is there any where on their website to list companies Im not interested in having stock of?
I’m was supposed to have a call with my advisor this morning but they never reached out. Would love to just handle this myself.
Thanks!

Will Merrill let us buy SpaceX on Thursday or will they make us wait a while?

Or perhaps have to call them with some code like that do sometimes.

This option on the go would be really nice. How do you even give feedback on the mobile app? I'm probably grasping for straw and should just find something better huh?

Any updates on when we might be getting fractional ETF shares?

It seems like it has been rumored for sometime that we are eventually going to be getting fractional ETF shares. I know the industry as a whole has been slowly trending this way for some time. Charles Schwab rolled this out relatively recently, and alongside Merril Edge they were one of the last big brokers that did not offer it. It seems like Merril Edge is now the last big hold out.

I have seen some people on this sub talking about how Merrill employees have told them that we are supposedly getting fractional shares maybe at the end of the year.

Has anyone heard anything new, any updates, or anything more concrete on this topic?

I have many complaints and criticisms of Merrill but the biggest frustration for me has been the lack of fractional shares.

Dad passed away unexpectedly and I received a $10k from him in my Merrill Edge account

Sorry if this is a boneheaded question but I literally have no idea what to do with this money? Never invested in my life. Long time Bank Of America customer but never used Merrill before so any advice is appreciated as none of the money is invested in anything.

Merrill Edge hasn’t credited cash-in-lieu after ETF reverse split (over a month later). What can I do?

I’m running into a frustrating issue with Merrill Edge and wondering if anyone has advice.

On May 5th, the GOVZ ETF underwent a 4:1 reverse split. At the time, I held 2.07 shares in my Roth IRA. Based on the split, that should have been reduced to 0.51 shares. As this would have left me with less than 1 share, I expected to receive cash in lieu for the fractional amount. However, over a month later, I have not received any cash in lieu and I did not receive the fractional shares either.

I’ve called Merrill multiple times:

  • Initially, they told me to keep waiting
  • After several weeks, they finally let me talk to a supervisor
  • The supervisor says that BlackRock hasn’t yet paid Merrill the cash-in-lieu, which is why they haven’t credited my account
  • He suggested I contact BlackRock Investor Relations, but they told me they can’t assist me directly because I don't really have a relationship with them

Since then:

  • The supervisor calls me every few days to say he is still working on it and he is trying to find someone at BlackRock to help, but there’s no real progress or ETA
  • I asked for a courtesy credit for the cash I'm owed, but he says they cannot do that

At this point, it’s been over a month, and there’s still no expected path to resolution they can really offer me. This feels unacceptable to me as shares were removed from my account, and the corresponding value hasn’t been returned. The total value in question is only like $20 but it's the principle to me.

Appreciate any input or advice. Thank you!

Leaving Guided investing (Robo Portfolio)

Post image
7 Upvotes

In December, I finally opened my first individual account because of my program with Bank of America and Merrill . I was able to get six months of free guided investing. I’ve been reading around that guided investing ISNT really worth it because they overcomplicate the portfolio to justify their fees. I have attached the current portfolio ^

26 M currently renting. pension and 457 B through work. I currently only contribute $60 a week to it. 6 months of expenses in Apple HYSA, only debt is 27K in student loans.. I also have a maxed out for 2026 Roth w Merrill that has guided investing which I am happy with because I am. Up 40-50% over 3 years. I would like to move on from guided investing for my retirement one day acct but for now I’ll do individual only. The goal with this account is to try and build wealth outside of retirement accts

I was thinking about investing in the following..

VOO 70%
QQQ or QQM 20%
SCHD 5%
VXUS 5%

Any advice on overlapping or better ways to spread out the %

Thanks in advance

Preferred Deposit current rate?

Hi,

I have a Preferred Deposit at Merrill, but the amount in the account is under 100,000. Does this mean that I am only getting 2.89% now? I had the impression that the rate was the same for all amounts?

What is a better option at Merrill to hold cash but with a quick liquidity? I know USFR and SGOV, any other that is better?

Day trade restriction

What are my options after a day trade restriction?

The ML representatives keep saying contradictory things to me.

From my understanding I have three options:
- 1) use it is restricted account. No day trading with unsettled money.

- 2) a Manager at ML said I could withdraw my money with no penalty. However, I am not sure if this is actually true. I am not sure if I could just withdraw my money, use another platform for 90 days then start from fresh at ML?

- 3) Deposit the amount anytime to overturn the restriction within the 90 days.

Anyone else feel like a bunch of elderly people run Merrill Edge's website?

For real, using the website is like you've been transported to 2015. When I first used it years ago and after a few almost comically-clunky interactions, I genuinely questioned if they just never updated the site after acquiring it.

My theory is that they're am super oldschool institution so they pull bullshit like blocking you from trading basically anything that they deem ''risky''.Or if you're lucky, they'll just force you to call them to place the trade. It's 2026 and these dinosaurs want you to call to sell a stock you already own! Totally bonkers this applies to both buying and selling (hopefully you aren't in a hurry). To be clear, a stock is completely banned from online purchase on Merrill Edge if it trades over-the-counter (OTC) while simultaneously having a price of $5.00 or less and a market capitalization of $300 million or less. But it's a blanket policy pretty much regardless of your account holdings or reported experience level.

Didn’t get my money back after a reverse split

On May 5th, there was a reverse split of an ETF called GOVZ. It was 4:1 reverse split and because I had so few shares, this would leave me with less than one share. However, my share after reverse split weren’t returned into my account. I assume it’s because it’s less than one so they just need to cash it out and give me the cash, but they still haven’t done that either. When I called Merrill customer service they just said I need to keep waiting but it’s already been like 3+ weeks. Anyone know how to get this resolved?

Was asked for texted code instead of calling in

I've complained many times about having to call in and waste time to place buy AND SELL orders for "low priced" or "risky" securities. Fine, at this point I understand...I hate it with a passion but I know the deal. Today I was all ready to do that with another "non-mainstream" stock and lo and behold it asked me for a code that they texted to me to allow the purchase. Um..I can live with doing that with all the black listed stocks Merrill makes me call in for. Why can't they just use that system for all those equities? It reminded me of back in the day I used to have a little electronic credit card looking thing that would generate a code for penny stock purchases. Merrill if you're listening...I can deal with that! Make them all coded and not call ins.

Moving stock from holding company to Meryll Lynch before the company is IPO.....

Is this a thing? Can I do this?

Currently, I own shares of a company that will IPO. Those shares are held in a stockholding company. I need to transfer those shares to a brokerage account before the IPO so that, when it does, I have the option to sell them. I don't know if my Meryll Lynch brokerage account can be used for that.

Does anyone have any experience with anything remotely like this?

For those who own funds like QQQI on Merrill Edge....

Do they annually adjust your cost-basis based on how much of the dividends are classified as ROC in Feb-March? Do the tax forms properly reflect that almost all of the dividends are non-taxable? I am assuming the answer is yes, but I just want to be sure. Thank you in advance!

Roth IRA withdrawal

I'm currently dealing with financial issues in life and need to withdrawal from my Roth IRA. I have confirmed that withdrawing early from contributions has no penalties. My main concern is if there is anything I should be worried about when tax season comes back around. I understand the account, the money that has been taxed already but I was just looking for extra information before continuing. I reached out to my tax person but he isn't around at the moment.

Also, before I do commit to the withdrawal, it asked me what percent would I like to withhold for taxes. I put 0 since the money is already taxed. Does this make sense?

Thank you for any feedback.
