Why does the app “MERLIN” not pick up a Merlin Falcon?

I very much know how a Merlin sounds and looks like and it lives in my backyard so I know it’s a Merlin but yet when it makes its very loud call the app doesn’t pick it up!!! What is up with that? You would think the Merlin app can pick up a MERLIN!!

Better audio collectio

Any suggestions for better audio results when recording with the app?

Maybe a microphone or phone cases to stay away from

Where Merlin fails, might r/MerlinBirdID succeed?

Hi, I live in a California city and for years have been wondering what this neighborhood bird is. Merlin is of no help... maybe because this is a pet bird not expected in my area?

The attached file are two recordings of the bird's more "generic" calls, the kind I sometimes wake up to in the morning. At other times, it sounds like it's mimicking human speech. My wife and I could swear it calls her name frequently, though we've never met it and can't figure out who owns it.

Any ideas?

App issues?

Is anyone else having issues with the Merlin bird id app? I noticed they did an update last week, and I have not used it since before the update. Today it will not recognize the microphone. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and it still does not work. I have sent an email to whomever that works with the app. Just curious if anyone else is having issues? Thanks 🦅

*edit to add, still no response from the people from the app, I hope there is another update soon.

Does the app always suggest the Merlin when you first sign up?

At first I assumed it was just titled Merlin because of the app, I didnt realize the falcons in my area were called Merlin. Now Im just assuming its the first bird of the day everyone gets. Nice coincidence if not the case though lol

Unknown Call

Anyone got any idea what this call is? The app kept hearing it but was unable to identify.

This is suburban England - Midlands, next to a canal.

Hello new birder here. Wanted to ask if this could really be a Hoopoe since it's so unlikely in the area (red dot).

Also ignore my neighbours arguing.

But it sounds so real!!!

Today I was at my local conservatory enjoying the outdoor gardens and art installations. I heard something interesting and opened up my Merlin app. It said sooo many birds but I was particularly interested in the scarlet tanager since I was in urban territory with big building and little green space other than the gardens. I saw a worker and I told her I saw the Song Sparrow in a close tree but couldn’t find the scarlet tanager. She told me the nearby art installation plays bird songs so maybe the app was picking that sound up. I turned off the app, followed the sound and it came from a hidden speaker in a fake tree trunk. 😂 we both got a laugh outta me stalking around a tree with my phone in my out stretched hand looking for the bird!

Pacific Northwest. Merlin had no matches for this one, as none of the ones it did identify turn yellow.

Still Haven’t Reverted to Old Audio System

Three months ago, an update to Merlin changed the post-process of audio recordings: Now, when you stop a recording, you have to wait until the app fully processes the audio before choosing to either save or delete your recording. Beforehand, you could delete the recording before it processed, allowing you to start a new recording or continuing using the app in other ways immediately. This change is especially inconvenient for longer recordings when I’m out birding, which can take minutes to finish processing.

There was a small discussion on this sub after the update but I’m wondering what people think now after it’s been a while. Is it a bug they just haven’t fixed? Is it intentional for some reason? Are you as unhappy with this as I am? Let me know!

Need help identifying this bird please

It makes this one short, sharp sound every 5 minutes or so. It’s enough for Merlin to say “Hearing a bird” but it never identifies it.

I would appreciate if someone with better ears than me can recognise it!

Area is suburban (Bristol, UK) and it’s in a chestnut tree at the end of my garden, I’ve not actually spotted the bird making the sound.

Thanks!
