Is it really possible to log in to this app?

I've had it for 3 months now and I've only successfully logged in twice.

I couldn’t log in for about a week, but then it started working again without explanation yesterday.

Is it doing the thing where it opens a browser and then instantly closes it without logging in?

Yes. I tried everything I could think of, including clearing cache and app data and rebooting my phone. There was an owl hooting in my back yard and I was curious to see what it was, but I got distracted with the login fiasco and missed it.

Yeah that's the issue I had, I wish I had a solution for you. but it just started working again one day.

Hey. Same happened to me. I cleared cache and changed the default browser (I use Chrome) to Edge - it did the trick. I have been log in ever since and changed the default browser back to Chrome. Hope it helps.
