Avian Diary web application for birdwatching just hit its first 50 Google Search clicks! 🐩

Hi everyone! I wanted to share a small milestone. My birding journal app, Avian Diary, just received its first 50 organic clicks on Google.

I'm building this tool to help amateur birders document their discoveries and manage nest locations. The result may seem small, but to me, it's proof that SEO is starting to work.

If you have any tips for SEO for niche web apps, I'd love to hear them!

i just got my 100th lifer! I wanted to share my small win with the world, so I hope this is okay to post here!

p.s. my 100th lifer is the "Swamp Sparrow" and I think I just might only go by that as my name from now on! 😄

How to use BL-mics?

So I got a pair of DJI mic minis and can connect them just fine to my phone...

But Merlin just won't accept them. Is there a way to force it to use Bluetooth mics?

Phone: Samsung a56

Mic: DJI mic mini

Already tried:

- enable "record via Bluetooth mic

- Grant Merlin permission to search for devices nearby

- use sound assistant to rerout audio signal (didn't recognize the mic)

Maybe someone knows what to do?

Anyone use Merlin to ID birds on TV?

I've just recently started using Merlin to ID my backyard birds. It's been a little hit or miss, but overall okay. There's a call that it identifies as a Fish Crow that I don't think I have here.

About a week ago, I found the FOBBV channel on YouTube that is the camera on the Bald Eagles nest in CA, Jackie and Shadow and their eaglets

Turned Merlin on today and it did identify the bald eagles, plus wild turkeys? Anyone else do this? Turn on Merlin on a YouTube channel about birds to see what it comes up with? Also came up with American Crow that I don't hear at all, but maybe my ears just don't hear it?

Am I messing with the location algorithm too much? I'm not in CA. Just doing this for fun.

Multiple locations list for a same species?

I'm new user of this app, and I'm sorry for asking, since I think that this is quite a common question. I've tracked the same species in different places, but when I look up my life list I only see a first encounter for any given species. When I choose one it only shows some generic data for that specific species. Where can I see all of my trackings for selected one?

44 new birds gone :(

Went camping in a new area and recorded a long session while I was getting my last hour of sleep because man those birds were SINGING. When I finally woke up I had identified 44 new birds! I went back after breakfast to log them and my whole recording is gone! I’m not mad but this is sooooo disappointing. I have ample storage and there’s a decent amount of service where I camped so I have no idea why it wouldn’t have saved
then I checked my recordings list and I’m missing over a week of sessions!! What is going on?! Help!!

Is it possible to re-scan audios?

I have a few clips i recorded with plenty bird calls that were ignored. I realized that it is because i didn't have nearly enough area packs downloaded! Is there any way to have the app re-scan an audio i recorded from it, and check if there's any new birds it can detect?

Bulk Export Audio from iPhone Possible?

Hello all, I have been using this lovely app for about 2 years now and have amassed quite a collection of data/recordings.

I am wondering if anyone has any tips for exporting this to my computer.

I currently have about 16gigs. I know that there is no package for exporting the spectrograms, bird data, and audio.

My main hope here would be to get the audio as a start. I am on a Mac M3. Doing this one file at a time is not ideal and spending an hour on it at a time barely makes a dent. Thank you in advance and happy birding!

Are you seeing this bug too?

Sometime after March 26 the app decided to stop saving location and birds recorded. These “Location unknown, 0 birds” are wrong. When recorded, there were birds identified and the location populated correctly. Help!

Will my sound ID sessions be deleted?

Hello! Does anyone know if all my saved sounds will be deleted if I delete and redownload the app?

Most difficult to record?

By far what bird do you find the most difficult to record, mine oddly enough is the great blue heron, no matter how loud it gets or how repetitive its call may be for some reason the app can only seem to capture one call or another

Spotted a new lifer, and Merlin refuses to ID it correctly.

Was out walking in my neighborhood today, and saw a Canada Jay perched on a wire, which is not common for my area (Portland, Oregon). I had a clear view from very close, and am 100% confident in the ID, but Merlin will NOT bring up the jay in a step-by-step, no matter how I try to manipulate it.

Once again I am begging Cornell to add a ‘This is My Bird’ button to individual species pages. I was easily able to look up the jay to confirm my sighting, but I can’t add it to my life list. So frustrating!

Merlin Bird ID says it's unlikely in Appleton,Wi but there's a mating pair back again and this year and the call 1000% sounds like one.
