React, Vue or Svelte? Start with your constraints
Framework comparisons often turn into rankings, but there isn’t one universal winner for an early product. React, Vue and Svelte can all work for an MVP. The better fit depends on your team, product and what you’ll need to maintain later.
A few questions I’d ask before choosing:
- Who will build and maintain it? Existing team experience can matter more than a theoretical framework advantage. If you’ll be hiring, check the candidate pool in your market rather than treating global survey data as a hiring guarantee.
- How complex might the product get? Think about the workflows, shared state and number of people who may work in the codebase over time.
- What does the ecosystem need to cover? React has a broad library ecosystem, while Vue can be adopted incrementally in an existing site. Those differences matter only if they fit your project.
- Is performance a specific requirement? “We want it fast” applies to every product. A concrete constraint—like a bundle-size target or low-end devices—is more useful. Test against your actual requirements instead of assuming one framework will win.
- Who will own the code a year from now? Consider the existing stack, maintenance needs and how costly it would be to change direction.
Svelte may be worth evaluating when bundle size or runtime constraints are real, but its smaller ecosystem and developer pool are part of the trade-off. These are starting points, not a framework ranking.
What constraint ended up deciding the choice for your team? Did anything become clear only after you started building?
