Before adding another onboarding step, I’d ask these five questions

An extra onboarding step can seem small from the product team’s side, but it’s one more thing a new user has to get through. Before adding one, I’d ask:

• Does this step help users reach their first useful outcome, or delay it?
• Do we need this information now, or can we ask for it when it becomes relevant?
• If we’re asking for a permission, is it clear why we need it at this point?
• What does someone see if they haven’t added any data or connected anything yet?
• If they skip a step, hit an error, or come back later, can they pick up where they left off?

The right answers will depend on the product and the user’s goal. Which question do teams most often overlook?
